March 2, 200521 yr Tighter control at border crossings KANGAR: -- Security at the two border crossings in Perlis will be further tightened to flush out illegals, including workers who cross the border daily to work here. An order had been issued to security agencies manning the checkpoints in Padang Besar and Wang Kelian to be vigilant, state immigration department director Mohd Zahari Hassan said. The tight security is to ensure that illegals do not hide in Thailand and return during a lull. “All foreign workers including Thais who cross the border daily to work would be subjected to checks. Those without valid documents would be detained and deported,” he told a press conference. Perlis Rela director Mej ® Mohd Basri Din said 200 personnel had been trained and would be backed by 300 other Rela members to hunt down the illegals during Ops Tegas. Round-the-clock operations roomshave been set up by the immigration (04-976 2736) and Rela (04-978 1415) to answer and respond to public inquiries. --The Star, MY 2005-03-02
