Government launches A(H1N1) website

By John Le Fevre

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- In its continuing battle to arrest the spread of pandemic A(H1N1), originally termed swine flu, the Government has launched an interactive website to allow people to gauge their exposure level.

The Thai-language only website, www.flu2009thailand.com, allows people who suspect they may have contracted pandemic A(H1N1) to compare their symptoms with those typical of confirmed patients and then decide whether they have the virus, seasonal flu, or are healthy.

The website contains information on how to minimize the risk of pandemic A(H1N1) infection, as well as other medical advice and a Twitter account to follow.

The website came online as the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) made preparations for testing its locally produced FluMist nasal spray on the first batch of volunteers.

The first 24 people to receive the experimental anti-viral spray will be announced on August 16, after approval is received from the GPO board for the trials to proceed.

At the same time, Public Health Minister, Witthaya Kaweparadai, said the number of cases of pandemic A(H1N1) will continue to rise from August to September, a time when seasonal flu will also be moving through the community.

He said the view was reached after finding a ten-times increase in the number of people with flu-like from June to July last year, compared to the same period this year.

A government campaign entitled "Join the Power to Fight 2009 Influenza" will also begin and comprise a series of campaigns targeted at individual community groups.

The government committee tasked with combating the spread of the pandemic A(H1N1) virus will also soon provide a lower cost hand-washing gel for provision free to commuters at train stations, subway and Skytrain stations and at piers of passenger boats along the Chao Phya River in Bangkok.

What a stupid Idea, all the people are going to move away from the red zone including the infected ones and spread the flu even faster.

What the He,,,l is wrong with the mentality of some government officials. Also would you believe what they say? :)

What a Good Idea.!

What a Good Idea.!

Actually, they need more scanners at Suvarnabhumi I think. I just don't see how anyone's going to make money on a web site.

Re: hand washing gels

I have seen a few brands who are extremely expensive. A few people are getting rich on this scare.

A hand washing gel is only effective if it contains minimum 30% of alcohol. I have checked five brands in Thailand, (one in a hospital). Not one gave the quantity of alcohol in the gel.

I and my Thai wife have tried to contact a few companies mentioned on the label.

One had a site that did not work for several day.

An other one answered the phone but was not capable or willing to give the amount of lacohol used in their gel. They feel that the consumer must ask this information in the shop where they bought the gel. Reaction in the shop: you must ask the producer.

Hand washing gels, if containing the right amount of alcohol can be an effective aid against the A(H1N1) virus. In some cases dry skin can occur and there seems to be a slight chance on fire hazard (rather difficult to believe since the quick evaporation and the low quantity of alcohol). Do not start your barbecue with handgel...

Wont be long 'fore some richard figures out a way to smoke, drink or sniff the gel
