US Pounds Iran After Hormuz Tanker Attacks Escalate Crisis

Washington launches strikes on more than 80 targets as Tehran vows retaliation and fears grow over global oil supplies

The United States has launched a wave of powerful air and missile strikes against Iran after a series of attacks on commercial oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz dramatically escalated tensions in one of the world's most strategically important waterways.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it struck more than 80 Iranian targets, including over 60 Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fast attack boats, missile launch sites and military command centres in what it described as a direct response to attacks on international shipping.

Washington said the operation was intended to impose "heavy costs" on those responsible for targeting innocent civilian vessels navigating one of the world's busiest energy routes.

Tanker Attacks Trigger Military Response

The latest crisis erupted after three commercial oil tankers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Although Iran has not formally claimed responsibility, both Qatar and Saudi Arabia accused Tehran of targeting vessels connected to their countries.

Qatar said one of its tankers, the Al-Rekayyat, was deliberately attacked while passing through the Strait, while Saudi Arabia claimed its tanker Wadyan was also struck.

Britain's UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported several separate incidents involving commercial vessels suffering damage from projectiles, including one tanker that caught fire after its engine room was hit.

Iran Denounces 'Violation' Of Peace Deal

Tehran condemned the American strikes as a breach of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed only weeks ago to reduce tensions following months of conflict.

Iran's deputy foreign minister warned that the Islamic Republic would take "decisive measures" in response, while the Foreign Ministry accused Washington of acting in "bad faith" and proving itself an unreliable negotiating partner.

Iranian state media reported explosions on Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and Sirik, with civilians reportedly injured by flying debris.

Hormuz Once Again At Centre Of Global Crisis

The Strait of Hormuz carries around one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas exports, making it one of the most critical maritime chokepoints on Earth.

Any disruption immediately raises fears of higher energy prices and supply shortages across global markets.

Only last month, Iran and the United States agreed on a framework intended to restore stability and establish a new joint administrative system for the waterway involving Oman and other Gulf states.

Those negotiations now appear to be in serious jeopardy.

Diplomacy Hanging By A Thread

Despite the military action, US officials insist diplomatic negotiations have not completely collapsed and say they remain committed to reaching a permanent agreement with Tehran.

Before the strikes, however, Washington revoked a temporary waiver easing some oil sanctions on Iran, further inflaming tensions.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to argue that vessels using routes not coordinated with Tehran or interfering with navigation systems risk disrupting what it calls the safe management of shipping through the Strait.

What Happens Next?

The danger now is that both sides become trapped in an escalating cycle of retaliation.

Iran has repeatedly warned it retains the ability to disrupt shipping through Hormuz, while the United States has made clear that any further attacks on commercial vessels will provoke an immediate military response.

With diplomacy under severe strain and global energy markets watching every development, the world's most important shipping lane has once again become one of its most dangerous flashpoints.

And now the grifter-in-chief has opened up "Freedom Fuel" gas stations selling gas at $3.47, right before the midterms. Oh what fresh hell is this? The stench of vote-buying is overwhelming. I'm SURE his motives is purely altruistic and he won't make a penny from any sales.

Yes, the White House launches Freedom Fuel at below market value gas. That means it's subsidized by government. Isn't that "Socialism" that they hate so much?

Yep, caveman tactics. Neanderthals wirlding bigger clubs.

So you only get this discount if you live in Philadelphia. Ought to make the other 99.99 percent of the country real happy with Trump. Meanwhile, where is the goddam tariff rebate check Trump promised me? Being spent in Philadelphia?

I think it's time for news agencies to return to the tried-and-tested way of reporting when they don't have evidence - to say 'claimed Washington' or 'authorities announced.' I don't mean this particular article, or the way it appears on AN, I mean all of the news reports in recent months in mainstream media. Because of visual censorship they can't verify what they are being told so they need to hedge a bit. We don't know if these events happened (at all actually) - we were simply told they happened.

Not to mention some of the sneaky tricky Israel is probably doing in using it's proxies in Iran to fire missiles such as to continue the war and involve the rest of the world. Makes sense as the ukrainians often do so and then pretending it was Russia, in order to draw in entire Europe in their war.

Following the strikes, Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US of committing ‘major’ violations of the initial ceasefire deal.
