Having just hit 50 I thought it was time for me to have my first colonoscopy. I'm feeling fine, but just thought I should have my colon checked out anyway.

Asked prices at PIH (Pattaya International Hospital) and just about fell off my chair.

With anaesthetic (not sure if local or general) = 29,000 baht

Without anaesthetic = 18,000 baht

At these prices I'm sure many cases of bowel cancer go undetected.

At Bumrungrad the cost is around 30,000 baht and that includes an anesthetic which you will need this unless you have a high pain threshold.

I feel pretty sure a butt check in the US is double the cost here if not more. 29k seems like a good price.

I've had two, both in the States. All in each were about 3500 USD including consultations, hospital and anesthesiologist. Used a drip anesthetic and was entirely painless. The preparation the day before and the morning of the procedure is the hardest part.

Very reasonable price. Bangkok hospitals charge much more. Chiangmai about the same price.

You could wait until you are 55,although if you really need peace of mind then the Bumrungrad in Bangkok has expert gastoenterologists trained overseas.

Must say that I was very pleased with the service at the Bumrungrad,and was sedated with dormicum which is all that is needed for the procedure.A general anaesthetic is not necessary.Recovery took about one hour,and was able to enjoy the night life in Bangkok that evening.

Total cost 20000 baht -excluding the night life.

Recently I had my 3rd colonoscopy/endoscopy (in my home country) and I am -unfortunately- blessed with an extremely low pain threshold and the pain I'm going through is horrible....cannot describe it.

I have to admit that once the "job" is over -it takes about 20-25 minutes- the pain is gone also but I need new clothes as I'm completely soaked...

Can't wait for the next one, summer 2010

just over 1 year ago average from other local hospitals was B30+K. Sattahip B41K. BHP had 'special all inclusive' for B12.5K Excellent service. Ask them if they will do another 'special' soon.

At Prince of Songkhla Hospital, Hat Yai, the cost is 7,000baht and just 3,500baht if you are legally married to a Thai. I have had a couple of colonoscopies and, with a skilled specialist who does several per day, the use of anaesthetics is completely unnecessary. Not even mild discomfort, and far safer.

I wish people would stop comparing health care prices in Thailand with those of USA. USA has the worlds highest health care costs, some 2-3 times higher than that of Western Europe, supposedly due to the lack of government health care and control. Good old capitalism at it's best

Are you trying to say that a colonoscopy in the U.S. involves the insertion of something more than a camera?

My friend had a conoscopy about 1 year ago at Pyathai Hospital in Sriracha for under 12,000 baht including being knocked out :-). For the above price, they found two polyps, removed them and tested them - again total cost was under 15,000 baht for everything!!

I have had two done.

One in Aust. including the drug that half knocks you out, no pain, no memory but you are conscious. In 98/99 it cost about 30k baht.

Second in Azerbaijan '04, about 15k baht. No drugs and the worst experience of my life. I thought he was going to end up either breaking through my stomach or ripping out my tonsils.

No matter your pain threshold I strongly recommend not being conscious for this proceedure

I would not pay for one in the LOS, surely it is wiser to wait until you go back to your (first world) home country and get one for free. After all, it is only a precautionary examination that you 'want' ; it is not as if you have blood in your stools, weight loss and altered bowel habit.

Well, I know what you mean...same-same with me but the pain is immense and I'm completely soaked when they roll my bed to the room where you have to wait for 1 or 2 hours until you're fit to go home (no self-driving).

So, it depends on the person; I've had it now 3 times and all three were a drama.

Recently had it done in the UK (free) 6 week wait, so not to bad, i have a family history of colon cancer, not a nice experience but i went the anastetic route its the wind afterwards that funny, carried out in a very nice way with professional personal. Nothing found i'm happy to say, mid 50's

I don't have a particularly high pain threshhold, and there was no pain involved. I wonder why so many people feel anaesthesia would be necessary? I was totally conscious, and actually watching the image on a monitor as they performed the procedure.

The most unpleasant part of the whole process was the laxative the preceding day.

Well, I know what you mean...same-same with me but the pain is immense and I'm completely soaked when they roll my bed to the room where you have to wait for 1 or 2 hours until you're fit to go home (no self-driving).

That's the first time in my life I hear about someone who decides NOT to go to a hospital because of a certain shareholder he doesn't like.

Colonoscopy is about a serious matter and if it's a good hospital I wouldn't care; my body is more important than a shareholder.

In many western countries the hospitals are public domain/government ownership; you wouldn't go there also if you dislike the government ?
