Hard Drive Upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi I have a friend that has a dell mini laptop(not sure on the model number- but 6 months old or so).

The problem is he only has a 7 gig hard drive & the Microsoft office eats up most of the drive & he only has 800 mbt's left.

So the machine is hating it(less than the 15% needed to run efficiently)

Can he get a 40 gig or more for a smaller dell? he does not need the hard drive for data, but for program space in the C-drive.

Thanks!

Do you mean you want to upgrade to another hard disk? If you do, you may check todo-backup.com/backup-resource/free-upgrade-hard-disk-software.htm

Try to get the model specs- is it displayed on this site? Dell Inspiron Mini

if its the 8GB model I trust an external HDD is the only solution.

Yeah either an external harddrive or a USB flash along with ReadyBoost (read more here).

I installed Windows XP on a Dell Mini for my friends girlfriend, and with all Windows Updates, MS Office 2007 and AVG she still has about 1.4 GB space left. Did you install all the office components or only the ones that your friend actually needs? Initially I installed the whole package, but quickly realized that that was a bad idea, so removed it again and only installed Word, Excell and PowerPoint (which was all she needed).

I guess he has the model under the Inspiron 12 . he says the hard drive is 7 gigs.so it is most likely the model Webfact is talking about. I suggested he dumps the Microsoft office parts he is not using as it is eating up most of his drive space. I don't think he can add an external for programs that need to be hooked directly into the motherboard so I think he is hunting to see if they have an actual 40gig available hard drive so he can add more programs. He has 3 computers & uses this as a traveler because it is so small.

It's a solid state drive.

Exactly 160 gig is the absolute smallest I would consider for any computer 8 is a little light (like atari or commodore 64 era. Dell must have had those drives since 1998 & were long on them & offered free to ditch them.

Best to make jokes only when you know what you are talking about :D

As posted, it's solid state drives. Most netbook manufacturers offered these drives with their first models. They helped improve battery life so they could promote their new netbooks as having a very long battery life and then just put an asterix after the statement claiming that it only applied to the SSD models.

Dunno my netbook gets 6-7hrs on my non-solid state drive. Any rate - regardless its fking useless with 8gb and person who bought it should know better.

Yes they improved battery life alot for non-SSD netbooks since the first models. I guess that's why you don't really see SSD in any of the new netbooks that's released. And yes I couldn't agree more on the 8GB being useless.
