Hi I have been traveling around looking at alot of grass to buy for the new lawn about 50tarangwah and noticed the grass I have see is only grass very skimpy with no soil on the bottom of it. used it on my last house and it was not very good ,

Any suggestions or were I can get sod with dirt under it.

thanks

I live in Bang boa tong, if u know of any good contractors let me know thanks., that can also put down the sod with a topsoil base.

Bang boa tong... where the fox hat? Sounds like you have the standard yaa nuan noi. Up here in CM the various garden markets sell it in half-metre lengths. One sq metre (two pieces) is around 20 baht for nuan noi (standard small blade), yaa Malay (fat blade), and yaa yippun (Japanese). The latter is slightly more expensive and the hardest to grow. Malay grass on the other hand is the cheaper of the three and, from my expereince, the best. It's hardy, grows in both full sun and shade and will patch up any patchy areas as it sends out creepers. It's also easy to cut and looks good even if you don't cut it well. It does grow quite fast, however.

There's plenty of threads on here (probably in the plant forum) about turf laying and the prices they charge. Make sure the guy is quoting for everything in one hit; the bottom layer, din dam and the grass... and know that they're quoting in sq m or talang wah (4 sq m), usually the former. Something like 50 to 80 baht per sq m depending on accessibility rings a bell but don't quote me on that. 50 baht (sq m) would be 10k.

Thanks for the message rsponse. And would u know how to say topsoil and not sand , the reason is the last time I did my lawn in my old house they used sand they were a really shady contractor. thanks again

No worries.

It's din dam (say it just like it's written); although it seems to have a wide ranging meaning, from the black fertilizer-infused stuff you buy in the big bags for about 40 baht a time to the muddy/grainy topsoil as we know it. They use sand under there for the drainage as most houses here are built on top of that compacted bakerite-type soil which has clay in it and is bad for drainage. The best way to have it done here is to spread some sand first and then couple inches din dam on top :)
