Bag Snatches On Rise Around Sukhumvit

Recommended Posts

I've just spent an hour in Thonglor police station with a friend who had her bag snatched by a lone motorbike rider on Sukhumvit. After talking to the police what was once a "seldom" crime is this area has suddenly become more commonplace. While I was in there, two foreigners came in to fill out reports of the same. One was male and one female, all three Asian of different nationalities and all accompanied at the time. The guy held on and got dragged along the ground hurting himself. Be especially careful between 9-10pm (all happened during this time with many bystanders). These 3 occurred on sois 26,39 and 23. Police also warned of a gang of 5 Filipino man using distraction techniques to rob (e.g one pretending he's hurt and grabbing your legs while the others do the business). Again, becoming more and more frequent on Sukhumvit while they're getting away with it.

The fanny pack I have has wire mesh in the pack material so if cut, you can't pull anything out AND there is wire running through the strap so it's difficult to covertly cut.

I also invest in a good pair of pants with many zipper pockets like 5.11 covert cargo pants. The zipper for the second pockets are visible, but it's just one extra step they have to take if they want to pick pocket you.

It was amusing when the police guys (non-uniformed detectives, not the admin guys at the front) recommended giving the Filipinos a "free kick" (their own words) if they start their scam. They meant you can assault them without any consequence, although kicking one in the head when there are 4 others involved might not be such a good idea - pack mentality rules with them too.

Certainly is happening more often. One of my friends had her bag snatched by a guy on a motorbike, outside Tesco Lotus On Nut a few months ago. Bastards, they deserve a good kicking IMHO.

Was it confirmed by the OP that the lone motorcycle driver that snatched his friend's bag was Filipino? Reading his post does not indicate this - and yet, it has turned into a Filipino-Bashing thread.

Posted

does the policeman proven that it's really Filipino gang who rob on that area? there are lot of cases you can point out but saying a specific group of people/nationality are unfair. also filipinos, thais and asians in general looks all the same. making a concrete basis for this one would be appreciated before pointing..you cannot just generalized..

anyway, always take care your belongings when outside...you cannot tempt people to get something from you if you yourself is watchful..

The Filipino con-artiists are bit players compared to criminals of other nationalities in Thailand that are involved in activities such as human trafficking, boiler room trading, wholesale fraud, gun trafficking, paedophilia.

The OP did not say that his friend was accosted by a Lone Filipino on a Motorcycle. So why has this thread become a Filipino-bashing thread?

Most of the Filipinos working in Thailand have work permits, have decent jobs and are certainly not criminals.

This is stereotyping and I find it most objectionable.

There are a lot of Filipino con-artists in Thailand.

Sensative breed you Filipinos. Ulysses clearly states that if approached by someone claiming to be Thai and speaking with a Filipino accent (which is a distinctive accent) and invites you to XYZ to be careful, and now you take that as some grave insult to your nationality... jeez, get over yourselves already.

Truth of the matter is the police state that there is a gang of Filipino scammers that opperate around that area, that doesnt mean all of you are scammers, just means that a few bad apples opperate out of that area. If you are that worried about your reputation as a Nation, get your asses down to Sukhumvit and deal with them :)

You should not say anything negative about Filipinos unless you have very thick skin.

Many years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor of a magazine that was included in the Sunday edition of the Bangkok Post. I made the statement that, "many Filipinos are dirt poor." The magazine had to keep printing irate letters from Filipinos denying it and calling me all sorts of nasty names for many months afterwards. :)

As could be said of people of other nationalities. There are card sharks, pool sharks and cheats.

But the OP and other persons that responded to the original post mentioned beating up Filipinos and using nicknames like Flippers. Britmaveric (post nbr.3) said “ Sounds a good Flipper Thumping is on the menu."

I sincerely believe that these terms were used to incite and they were by no means endearing terms.

Now you say that Filipinos are thin skinned?

Why don't you try something anti-semitic and try to find out if Jew are sensitive?

If a whiteman refers a black person using the "N" word, don't you think black people would come down on you real quick?

No one said anything negative about Filipinos. We were discussing Filipino con artists.

Why get so defensive about criminals? :)

Duhhh!!!! The OP never mentioned nor confirmed that the snatchers were Filipinos.

So how can this thread be about Filipinos or as you say Filipino con artists? Are you being racist?

No the thread is about bag snatches on Sukhumvit. It might be good to stay on topic. It might even be wise to be careful about insulting others.

I was reffering to the highlighted portion of the OP's thread - which clearly states the police are warning of a gang of Filipino's - im not being racest, insulting or discriminating - im reacting to the OP's comments and our Filipinos posters reactions :)

There are bad apples in every nationality, my own included :D

This is from the original post. I am not being racist and I am not off topic. :)

it might be wiser also not to mention specific gang unless proven with evidence..right? nor even race..Filipinos are not sensitive breed of people...they just honored their names...same as Thais do...or even Farangs in what ever their nationalities..

just please do take care your belongings when out on that area or even where ever you are...you cannot tempt a robber unless you show something that will triggers them...

Well maybe you should get down to Sukhumvit and deal with your fellow countrymen who are dishonouring your name, or just accept that whilst you and many of your brothers maybe good honest people, there is an element that is not. :)

So Filipinos are guilty by association? The OP linked two incidents the bag-snatching and Filipino gangs and rolled it up as one.

That portion of the thread which you highlighted had nothing to do with the snatching. It's as if Filipinos have been made PRE-EMPTIVELY GUILTY.

Round up the usuall suspects mates!

even police just suspects the gang...but didn't even catch and prove the they are Filipinos...then how can you conclude that they are Filipino? so i believe we must not be specific on the issue about Filipino gang (not that i care for them)...but we must just point out here on the thread that at Sukhumvit we must take care because there are robbers...isn't?

i want to point out here that you cannot point your finger to somebody unless proven guilty.. right? always remember that when you point to someone there are much fingers pointing to you...

Hey Angilicus:

Whilst I understand your anger about the branding that is going on, perhaps your argument should be made with those who made the original statement in the press?

I think if you take a look at other sections of this forum, from time to time other individuals / groups of other nationalities get called out for this and that (see topic in newsclipping about foreigners taking over farmland illegally).

Anyways, if you look at the issue differently, we can't have groups of locals riding around stealing purses now can we?
