Hi there,

My wife has just received her spouse visa and we move to the UK next month. She has around 200k baht in a Bangkok Bank account that she wants to take with her, and I'm not sure of the best way to do it. My idea is to transfer it into my UK account and give it her back when we get there. That way I can check it's gone through before we leave Thailand. A moneygram used to cost around £20 if I remember correctly, so I'm hoping it's around the same here.

Does this sound like the best course of action?

Thanks for any advice -

SCB I know charge around 1500THB to make a TT transfer and it happens in real time. Western Union or other transfer agents are equally as good and probably cheaper. Can I ask how long it took for the visa application process?

Thanks for the info. The visa application took around ten weeks. There is a (very long) thread here that is tracking the latest processing times.

Good luck with your application

You are alowed to take far more than that out of the country in cash, so you can take the money and deposit it in your account when you get to the U.K

If you were to take the cash as Thai baht to the Uk then you would loose out a lot when you bank it. The Uk bank would probably want about 60 baht for each £1

I thought about taking cash, but I'd rather not carry it, especially as we have a ten-hour layover in the Middle East somewhere. I'm assuming if we send it to my account it'll be changed at an exchange rate similar to what we'd get if we changed the cash at a bank in the UK, although I don't know that for sure.

Maybe cash is not such a bad idea if I can get a good money belt. It'll save us around £20 bank charges.

But the thought of being in Suvannaphum airport with a wad of cash makes me nervous ...
