This is very strange. I am with TOT, use their DNS, and have never seen references to mict in the status bar or redirects to their warning page. I do not try porn or gambling sites so maybe once you do try, your account at the isp is flagged, and you get redirects/ checked by mict. That is just a thought - nothing more.

"Since I made that change the internet is zipping here, never ran so fast, unbelievably so."

12DrinkMore,

Brilliant Idea! -- I didn't think I was having a problem, but I was intrigued by your comment on speed, so I tried it. Kinda like pulling off of a back-soi on to a Super-Highway!

Kinda makes me think all of our traffic has been re-routed so "someone" could grab a copy of whatever they want. ( just my speculation ) -- [ not too keen on some anonymous "someone" grabbing a copy of my bank, credit card, financial statements, etc. ]

One problem: I tried downloading a file, the normal XP file-save window appeared, but the download never starts.

I tried the same download through a proxy and it works as expected - puzzling???

Obviously more than a few directs towards mict...

What this will do is redirect any access of w3.mict.go.th to your own computer, which, unless you a running a local website, will quickly return nothing, rather than wait for w3.mict.go.th which times out after a long delay.

I'm not gay, but I could kiss you! :D

After making your change, pages appear to be loading faster.

I wonder how long this little gem of information will take to spread around Thailand. :)

Works as normal for me - running fully updated XP SP3.

Me too on TOT, never seen this ...is it a Maxnet thing or is it all ISP companies??

I tried some porn sites to test (lol) and just got up a '404' page on some saying you can't access it... that as far as I know has been around a long time.

But for general surfing, no problem and no royal police thing seen yet.

P.S: Webfact, see yer a mod now, nice and yer the man: But do you have an opinion to this? I skimmed this thread throughout and seem to only find Maxnet users complaining and I think some reference to True (but vague) ....is it just a/or some specific ISP's? Thx Webfact for your input.

"I also use this for all those annoying adverts . . . speeds up browsing amazingly!"

Sir Wolf,

You're a Genius! -- Kinda feels like riding in the back of a Limo in the Indianapolis-500 :D

Lotsa folks ( me included ) owe you at least a dinner & drinks if and when your locale should happen to appear on the horizon.

Hope this little "gem" doesn't get you booted from any WWWs that you might occasionally visit . . . :)

Problem solved. The lock hosts file read-only protection was selected. I had to go into Spy-Bot (Advanced mode) and uncheck the "lock hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers" first.

Reason for edit: forgot to add my thanks.

Help! The mict.co.th fix is still not working for me. I cannot save the "host" notepad file. It will either say "Cannot create file...make sure the path is correct" or that I don't have privileges to change the file, which is strange because I should have administrator privileges on the computer.

Thanks!!

EDIT: Just got the white mict.co.th page timeout while posting this reply!! Creepy!!!

Check file permissions by right mouse click and select properties.

Tab general: "read only" should be unchecked.

Tab security: make sure you have write permission.

If that is OK, then possibly your virus protection is locking the file. Some viruses try to redirect traffic using the hosts file. Turn it off and try to save the file, see above post for example.

google translates this to

Sorry, the National Police have suspended the connection to this web site.

With photos. Or inappropriate messages such raunchy gambling.

This is happening to me now, with True, trying to access Photobucket, I've tried the fix suggested earlier in this thread but nothing changes, any more suggestions?

I've been running into the good old MICT blocks more frequently over the last two days. Pages blocked include the wikipedia entry on the King, as well as the Asia Sentinel homepage. These were active only a few days ago...

FYI for everyone.

mict.go.th is a dedicated server ran by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies. The blocking and latent or slow access people are experiencing is the system administrators running a filter, looking for key words and specific web sites.

Due to the nature of the beast, funneling the web traffic through a single bank of servers can and usually will bring things to a screeching halt. This is pretty much like a 40 lane highway suddenly bottle-necking into a 1 1/2 lane country road.

The MICT does not have the servers to access all the web traffic. (It would take more servers than Microsoft runs to try that one) Consequently they run random 'surveys'. But their programs and computers can get overloaded very fast, especially during heavy traffic times.

Some answers.

Q. Can they monitor your computer and keep a record of your activities?

A. Yes. Your computer broadcasts information about itself to every web page it visits.

Q. Do they keep records of web sites visited?

A. Some. However, profiling is mandatory. The amount of web surfing in Thailand would take an army of tens of thousands of computers and techs to keep up with. They have a hot list they monitor, and the MICT administration can arbitrarily block or monitor certain things.

Q What are they monitoring?

A Aside from their own heartbeats? Seriously, their priorities appear to be anything related to the King. Thaksin is no doubt high on their list. The Minister of MICT also appears to have a gripe against porn. That is probably the biggest bottle neck cause as about 1/3 of internet traffic is porn.

Q Can I get into trouble?

A Yes. But you will have to make a serious nuisance of yourself or get very unlucky. They are constantly flexing their muscles, but their practical policing efforts might have the occasional problem. Additionally, other administrations like those overseeing foreign businesses can seriously resent the MICT from causing problems.

Q Is their any way to get around the filtering?

A Yes and no. When they run a filter they can choke all connections in a given area. Keep in mind, they control the big pipe everyone connects to. There is no program or trick that can avoid it. Shut down and try a reconnect. All internet traffic has multiple pathways. Sometimes you can get lucky and bypass the bottlenecks.

Q Is there anything a person can do?

A Follow some basic guidelines:

-Avoid anything related to the King.

-Avoid Thai politics. Any political forum can be asking for trouble.

-Beware Chinese web sites.

-Porn and popular site surf. WHAT? Yes. As long as you avoid stupid stuff like child porn or exotic crud and stick to mainstream you will just become one of the huge crowd.

Yesterday (230210), most of the day, very slow Internet. Not seen Thai police message. In the evening suddenly everything OK. This morning same slow. I can go to the home pages of a site, e.g. Thaivisa, but as soon as I go into the page of a certain topic, everything freezes. Closed down PC, restarted and saw 5 Windows updates. After the updates, everything fine.

youtube wont dload videos on my interent in Chiang Mai, i noticed as the bit at the bottom always seems to be going through that w3 mict address then just sorry video not available

Same message a couple of times browsing Thaivisa, couple of times checking on a couple of UK financial sites too.

Clicking refresh got past the message.

Purely for research I checked a well known 'adult' site, no problem at all.

For the second day I can not listen to the news from home=Austria Vienna=because

the site www.radio.orf.at is blocked.

I am redirected to this mict.go.th and this site does not open to leave a complaint.

I called the embassy in BKK and they say they are not blocked.

I called the consulate of Austria in Pattaya who could not help.

I called the radio station in Austria and they were very interested in the fact.

If the calls are of any help is doubtful.

What could this little Austria have on the news that would endanger anything in Thailand?

I guess the problem with the Royal Thai Police Server w3.mict.go.th can be they don't know handle the censur filtre.

Eg. I go in facebook and play game farmville, happy island, no problem to login to the game if I am in facebook already.

Would I go eg to the game "cafe world" I see after loading time from zynga.com sudden the loading is divert via w3.mict.go.th

An other problem, I colleague of mine have a WEB which start www.powware.ch ..... this can bee reach from all countires except Thailand. The login is also divert via w3.mict.go.th and after nothing more happen or error message. May we think as - joke - because his WEB start with po ...... the RTP Server catalogise this to porno and/or powware to poron ware but the WEB is a pure technical page :) similar happen in the past with former comecon / communist estern europe country during elect0onic etc. embargo .....!!! to censurate is not easy I guess

I often wonder whether those 'blocks' occur deliberately or rather accidentally due to technical problems (overload, misconfiguration, etc). I mean why would w3.mict.go.th never load?
