Royal Thai Police Block ?

Well looks as if they are testing their blocking software... this would be my best guess. :)

Any way of getting some sort of official word about this from the Royal Thai Police (if in fact they are the ones doing this)? My concern is if it is some individual or group posing as the Royal Thai Police attempting to hack into the country's internet. Sounds paranoid - but obviously I don't know. Question - is that a possibility?

Yeah, march into the nearest Royal Thai Police station and demand an explanation.

Or you might start at a police box. Let us know the result.

Would be interesting (and easier to understand what is happening) if everyone who is experiencing this intermitent problem could tell us which ISP they use and if they are using their ISP's DNS or OpenDNS. Perhaps they were testing intercepting outbound DNS traffic, or OpenDNS traffic in particular.

The most logical explanation is that they've hooked up the DNS filtering to a big red button on the desk of the sen yai, for when the rumored stealth coup goes into effect. He wisely decided to test it just to make sure it won't be his ass on the line when it doesn't work come game time. :)

I got it twice last night (21st). Not seen since. I'm on Maxnet Indy 5 mbps.

I use 4 DNS servers so don't know which one was being used at the time:

208.67.222.222 - OpenDNS

208.67.220.220 - OpenDNS

203.121.130.42 - MaxNet

203.121.130.39 - MaxNet

Could anyone do me a favour and test this URL from within Thailand and let me know if it is accessible - the domain hasn't been resolving. The IP address works fine though, maybe this is just a problem with 'True ADSL'

http://www.mycyberhosting.net

It didn't give the police warning but was unreachable, I suspect there is a problem with the True DNS service and somehow there are a whole bunch of domains missing from it, I can't help thinking it's related to some kind of cock up with their censorship system although I could be wrong.

I'm not in Thailand at the moment so can't run any more tests myself. This is a website which belongs to a colleague of mine and we have had reports from various people who can't access any of our servers from within Thailand, it's almost as if they have blocked an entire web host for some reason.

Edit : It's working fine from England at the moment.

Not working on True Internet ADSL Bangkok it says domain doesn't exist

This might actually be the Thai Cyber Crime Act being tested more thoroughly than it has been previously - my spelling of 'banana', and often my pronunciation of the word, is often misinterpreted !

The act is pretty draconian, and it should extend as far as internet cafes and any public wireless access points but I suspect the first people to feel it will be those that subscribe to an ISP connection as the govt body will target them first.

What you have seen/experienced is probably just a result of a 'testing of the water' exercise as they try and put some controls in place at the ISP level.

But who knows.

one pc with opendns and maxnet premier getting the page

laptop with on same maxnet connection not getting the page, using opendns as well

I'm pretty much using the same configuration - Maxnet Premier, OpenDNS - and also seemingly experience the problem on one box in particular (although this may just be happenstance).

I'm not using a static IP with Premier (by default, you don't get one), and the machines are bridging the router IP, so IP addresses can't explain the disparity in behaviour.

I use three different browser apps simultaneously and I'm starting to think I only get the problem on the application I use the most ... so I'm wondering if that might be telling. Have cleared cache (no change); don't really want to clear out cookies but may try doing so if the problem persists.

Anyone find an answer to this yet? It's been happening to me infrequently since last night. I have Maxnet in Chiang Mai. It's not often, and not tied to one website.

O.K. gentlemen. Let's see if we can put some sense in and take some fear out of it.

First look at history. Look back. In some last 2500 years all nation-states had it. Call it secret police, informants, spies, spanish inquisition, censorship, lese majeste, national security, state secrets, pornography, blasphemy, heresy, gestapo, kgb, fbi, cia, surete, mi6, or any other name. The sauce or glazing may be different, but the main dish is always the same: A MUZZLE ON YOUR MOUTH. It always was, is and will be there.

The means can be different. Ceasar would send you poison or a knife. Chingis Khan nookers would break your back. Spanish/Roman Inquisition would burn you on a stake.

Lenin/Stalin/Hitler/Mao would??? do something!

These days they close your internet site, restrict access, blackout the names in your postings, put he_l and <deleted> instead of your real words. SO WHAT?! Find some real drama in life and concentrate on it... Or did you really think that a publicly open forum accessible to anyone, is ignored by the your caretakers? Maybe you really think that same caretakers can not control such a forum?... Please, be wise, or be smart. :)

How about being both? There is nothing wrong with attempting to understand what is occurring. It is neither wise, nor smart to bury one's head in the sand when experiencing a phenomena that has yet to be explained. No fear, no panic, merely attempting to understand.

Dear Ventura, you can't be both... Do you know the difference between wise and smart men?

As to explanation and understanding,- read my post again, try to get its meaning, not picking a word. :)

If I remember right, the Cyber crime act demanded a court decision to block an Internet site.

So, if this is still true, then all these blocks are illegal! And I don't see a legal reason to not circumvent illegal blocks ....

Go ahead and sue them, please let me know the results, but please hurry as i only have about 25 years left , :)

Hmmmm... is anyone getting this while using OpenDNS or is it just people using their ISP's DNS?

I have TOT ADSL with a speedtouch modem. When I access the modem I can see the DNS server settings but I dont see an option to change them to use the Open DNS. Any suggestions on how to do this are appreciated.

do you see numbers in that modem i.e. 202.152... ? if yes write them down and delete them! Save your modem/router settings

Open Control Panel - Network connections - right click on your connection---> properties ---->tcp/ip settings

Attention: I do not use opendns

change the dns to your preferred dns

Maybe I've been here too long to think this way, but here goes: Next time things seriously heat up in Bangkok and the authorities want to cut communications links, traditionally the radio/TV media, we'll not be able to access the internet as we could in the past. And that got me to thinking, is it possible to circumvent such actions or are we at their mercy?

if this in store - which I strongly doubt -than it will be done by other means of technology not with a Royal Thai Police website blocking ...

I haven't faced any of these reported problems so far. The reported providers seem to have a server related DNS/cache problem - thats MHO.

I hope this is not a trial run for our next coup....... :)

I am more interested in staying on topic, not debating semantics. Perhaps if you wish to pm me, I can explain why I believe one can be both smart and wise.
