Rolled Corn Mill

Hi all,

Can someone direct me as to where I could get hold of a mill for rolling/crushing corn, the one that was used on the farm was powered by a belt driven engine not to different to the ones used to power the walking tractors.

As a youngster before corn was fed to livstock it would be either rolled or crushed to make it more digestable and would be less chance of corn that went in at the front end coming out the other end undigested and therefore giving no real benefit.

Cheers

The Ag colleges determined several years ago the cattle in feed lots, etc did utilize the whole corn kernel, thus rolling/cracking was a waste of effort/money. The grain is and has been for several years as feed, without milling.

So you don't know where I can get a mill?

The milled corn is more for various fowl and small live stock, free range pigs, not so much cattle.

I have a hammer mill

B8,000 for a 10 inch wide

driven by 11 hp Kubota diesel

B23,000 second hand B40,000 ish new

It would work just as well on less power for less output.

Cheap for such a high capacity machine

Purchased at Taisan, the Kubota dealer in Mae Sot.

600 kg per hour dry corn

if the 11 hp is totally consumed.

Photo of new machine attached.

More photos available of upgrades to water cooling

Mine is trailer mobile,

but the ideal setup would be electric motor bolted to a concrete floor.

Dust is a significant concern...best to duct tape the joints tightly

They also offer a 6 inch wide mill,

a little cheaper yet,

which a friend uses very happily on a Honda 5.5 hp gas engine,

Photo also attached.

More detailed photos available if interested.

Echoing slapout's comment,

for livestock it isn't necessary to grind

I currently feed corn to hogs by soaking it a day to three in water.

They don't like the dry ground corn, but eat steadily eagerly on the wet whole grain.

I think it best to never let them get hungry,

so they eat a few kernels at a time and chew thoroughly.

If they were hungry they would gobble it and probably pass through as you mentioned.

We also feed hogs ground dry mung bean.

They will eat the mung bean whole just as happily.

I feed Goats dry whole grain corn,

they like it and do fine even on off quality

They chew when they eat, then again in their cud,

so nothing passes through

Ruminants can manage a bit of mold,

their digestion is bacteria driven

so they get the feed that pigs would not handle in their more particular stomachs.

The ground corn I dump to Catfish, off quality grain also doesn't bother them.

We grind both corn and mung bean for chickens,

with very good results.

I will make some enquires with the local Kubota dealer when we are at Loei next week.
