Hi Guys,

My Thai wife is applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK,

she has been in the UK for approx. 5 years but has only just obtained the ESOL 'Skills for Life' qualification.

Form SET(M) states she can apply in person at a public enguiry office for a fee of 1070 pounds.

1. Is this an interview with a number of questions she needs to answer correctly to obtain her visa?

2. Can I attend the interview?

3. How long does the process/interview take ie 10min - 1/2 day?

4. I live in Croydon, is there a long waiting time before we can attend the office?

5. Any other info that might help?

As always thank you in advance for any help.

She can apply in person - but why should she/you want to do so? Save £200 and apply by post. She has every right to remain in the UK until a reply is received.

Hi paully,

Thank you for the reply.

My wife is due to give birth in the middle of January and wants to have

the baby in Thailand.

We are worried the postal application will take a long time, hence the reason

for applying in person.

Do you know how long a postal application takes?.

Why go all the way to Thailand to have the baby. If it is to be near her family then that's fine, but if it is to do with Thai citenship then it is much easier to have the baby in the UK so that British citizenship is automatic, and then just register the birth at the Thai Embassy. They will issue a Thai passport straight away. The one I got raised some eyes as I took my daughter to Thailand on a holiday when she was 4 years old, using the Thai passport. The picture inside was of a 1 day old baby!!!! But she was still allowed to use it!

The main reason is to be near her family,

she is also unimpressed with the NHS treatment & hospital in Croydon and would prefer to go private in Thailand.

There is a good hospital in Khon Kaen that she knows really well ( Ram hospital I think it's called)

She is still in two minds what to do :)

Gibbo,

Quite understand the reason now. My wife's postal ILR application took only about 6 weeks one year ago so I'd anticipate your wife's passport stamped and back well before January. But can't guarantee, of course...

My wife was granted further leave to remain 20 months ago because she did not pass the life in the uk test,

I take it she can apply for indefinite leave to remain before the second 2 years is up now that she has got the relevant qualification.

Yes, now that she has satisfied the KoL requirement she can apply for ILR without waiting for the FLR to expire.

I have to agree i would have the baby here the family will expect you to weigh it in as well :) .

So out comes the baht again, however on a more serious note i would have the baby born in the UK.
