Inquiry Regarding Renewal Of Thai Passport

Featured Replies

Hello, I am a 20 year old natural born US citizen. Because my mother wanted me to be able to become a dual citizen, she arranged for a thai birth certificate. After I obtained my birth certificate, she applied for a thai passport. I currently have an expired Thai passport issued in 1994 expiring in 2002. The question I have, though, is that if I want to renew my Thai passport, what documents would i need? And also, how come I do not have a "Personal No." in my Thai passport. Isn't a Personal Number assigned with a thai birth certificate?

Thank You

Just look at the webiste of the Thai embassy in your country. You might need the birthcertificate and of course the expired passport.

But since you already have a Thai birth certificate and passport it should be pretty straight forward for you and you shouldn't have any problems getting a new one.

You don't have a personal number because that would be your ID card number and you don't get those until you are 15.

Info about renewing your passport can be found here on LA consulate website. http://www.thai-la.net/passport/passport-index.htm

You can go to any of the 3 (Chicago, NY or LA) consulates or the embassy in DC to renew your passport. They also make mobile consulate visits to other locations.

Also you can travel to Thailand on an expired passport and renew it here.

Not quite.

All thai's receive an ID number at birth, so long as they are born in Thailand. The only exception is those who are not born in Thailand.

Without an ID number, the only way to renew the passport quickly is to do it via an embassy or consulate, as they can grant an 'exception' to the need to provide an ID number during the application process (all Thai passports have both the passport number and their ID number entered on the details page).

If he were to have it renewed in Thailand, he'd have to go throiugh the rigmorole of getting his Thai ID number issued at the local ampur, getting registered on the Tabieen Baan and then getting the Thai photo ID card issued. Then, and only then, can the passport office issue a passport within Thailand.

Best do it through the embassy is my advice.

Hmm, I am confused. If a Thai ID or a Tabian Barn is a requirement to renew a passport, then how will I be able to renew the passport if I do not have a personal number on a tabiarn barn or a thai id. I also do not have one on my expired passport, so if I go to the consulate will they automatically assign one to me with the renewal of this passport?

Thank You

LA consulate website also lists a house book or ID card as being a requirement to renew a passport.

Yes, it is slightly misleading, especially in the case of overseas born Thai's.

As mentioned, if you are born outside of Thailand, you aren't issued with an ID number, nor are you registered on a Tabieen Baan. These things can only be applied for in Thailand, when you intend to settle there.

As a result, the embassy will waive the requirements for these things for an overseas born Thai: they will only require the Thai birth certificate and if available, the previous Thai passport. All that is necessary is proof of Thai citizenship, which the passport and BC provides.

Once issued with the Thai passport, that person can come and go from Thailand as often as they like, and stay for as long as they like. There is only a real need to apply for an ID and ID card when you decide you want to live and work there...and then getting registered makes sense.

Contact the consulate or the embassy and see what they say. I can only go by what is posted on the website.
