TUI brings in Scandinavian travellers

BANGKOK: -- The tourism industry will receive a big boost in the upcoming high season, as major travel agency TUI Nordic has sold 60 per cent of its winter packages for Thailand to Scandinavian travellers.

CEO and managing director Christian Clemens said despite the economic slowdown, Finnish and Scandinavian travellers remained interested in coming to Thailand, particularly in the winter.

They spend Bt8,000 to Bt10,000 per day per head on an average stay of 14 days.

From December 15 to next March 5, the company plans 34 chartered flights per week for Phuket, bringing in 120,000 travellers. Clemens said most of the available tour packages had been sold.

He attributes this success to "product quality", with many luxury hotels here scaling back their room rates 10 per cent from the same period last year.

Thailand is a popular destination for travellers from Finland and the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

However, Clemens said they generally came to Thailand only in the winter. Only recently has Turismo Asia, TUI Nordic's agent here, in cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, successfully convinced some Finns and Scandinavians to spend time in Phuket during the summer months instead of on the Mediterranean Coast.

He said traffic to Thailand next summer should increase 10 per cent year on year to 16,000 visitors.

Last year, TUI Nordic sold 99 per cent of its summer packages.

That is a lot of short time, about time we got back to the basic economics that made this country what it is today.

HEH, Seem to be that they have found some oil in Sweden and Finland? I would say Bt800 to Bt1000 per day excl. sheiks from Norway.

These people spending 8000-10000 baht a day are Norwegians of course.. Swedes? HAHAHAHAHAA.. They spend maybe a 100 baht a day tops.

Hehe This is about 6 to 7 thousand Kr Norway,and with a family of 4 this is not a big big amount !Shopping,shopping ,about 1500 ahead, not much.They been saving the hole winter,or summer.It's a holyday you know! So ,for a Norwegian Family this is no problem!
