Retirement Visa To Work Permit Back To Retirement Visa?

Featured Replies

I have been living in Thailand for five or maybe even seven years on retirement extensions. Now I was offered an opportunity to work for the King, but I assume that will automatically necessitate a work permit. I believe that to get the work permit I have to give up the retirement extensions. My plan is to do the work for only about 2 years and then go back into retirement. Will I have a problem then getting my new visa? For example, will it necessitate all the requirements I went through the first time such as applying in person in the USA? I am trying to anticipate whether this job is worth the troubles I might have from immigration later. Any thoughts?

It never requires any action in the US - you could have done here and can do it later - all that is required is a stay of more than 21 days and the financial proof in Thailand. So no; there will not be any problem changing back to retirement.

The only possiable negative would be if the financials were increased as you would likely not be grandfathered at the old rate.

I have heard :) that some Labour departments have issued a work permit based on a retirement extension of stay. If not, then I wonder if it might be possible to convert the retirement extension to a non-imm extension for work without leaving the country?

I guess that lopburi

is required is a stay of more than 21 days

is referring to the requirement of having an entry stamp valid for at least another 21 days in order to apply for the retirement visa in Thailand.

Maybe you'll get some special dispensation working for the Top Man? :D

21 days is the requirement for change of status from tourist or visa exempt to non immigrate visa in the retirement process.

I expect you will have to obtain a non immigrant visa outside Thailand to get the work permit issued.
