Thai power consumption hits record high

BANGKOK: -- High temperatures and continuing economic growth helped drive power demand in Thailand to a record high, the state power agency announced Tuesday.

Demand for electricity hit a record high of 19,593 megawatts on Monday, the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand said.

The figure was 1.4 percent higher than the previous record of 19,326 megawatts set in March last year, the agency said.

It said the increase was due to rising industrial production and heavy household demand amid high temperatures of about 38-40C (100-104F).

During March to May _ Thailand's hot season _ EGAT expects power demand to reach a new high of around 20,700 megawatts. It has prepared electricity reserves of around 2,000 megawatts to meet the demand, it said.
