Hi,

i live in a rural area just outside of CM, plenty of thais around us but closest farang is3-4 km. Today a thai police officer came to our house saying he would patrol the neighborhood keeping an eye on our house.Coming by a few times in the evening.500 baht a month.

Seems ok to be but has anyone had this happen?

I was robbed 3 moths back so maybe this is a good deal/

Did he offer you a red box or a sign to display, so passersby will know the police have taken an interest?

This is totally normal, but I do not think that it helps a lot as the criminals know they only come by every once in a while.

I had a similar offer when I lived in Hang Dong.

The police proposed a deal where they watch the premises, place a red box outside my house, for a fee of 1000 baht per month. Reading between the lines, what this really means is that, in the event of an emergency, phone the police station and we the police may class you as a priority customer because you are paying.

But I discovered the best method of security here in Chiang Mai, is to always be polite and socialible to your neighbours and if in the event of an emergency, one can call on them for help.

Also it is wise to keep your head down, stay out of trouble, remember you live in a foreign country and above all, keep a calm attitude, especially to the people living around you.

Follow these guidelines and one can prosper here in happiness and safety.

Was speaking to a friend a few days ago, they have a red box and a book, was telling me that sometimes when the police arrive they sign for 3 or 4 days in advance then they don't see them for the rest of the week.

My experience with the TPD and other BIBs in CM has been positive. I would tell you to invite him in for a beer or two. Establish a personal relationship as you would anywhere with a business. Ask for his cell phone number. It is good to have a personal contact just in case, plus you made a new Thai friend. For 500 BT

a month you can also buy a little peace of mind. Cheap.

I agree with everything that cmdream said. These people can be very helpful in a jam.

Someone was vandalizing my business on a frequent basis and sending me threatening e-mails.

The red box did not work for me, but when they raided the suspect's business and made them produce passports and work permits and warned them that it was pretty obvious that they had something to do with the problem and that they were being watched, all the problems suddenly stopped.

They did start again later on a much less aggresive basis, but after they saw a security company installing cameras and alarms, as one of the policemen suggested, it stopped permanantly.

There is a red police box outside my house about 8-10 meters from my front gate. In the 13 months I've lived here, I've never once seen the police come down this soi.

Thanks for all the replies, they did say they would have the box and sign in..and for 17 b a day. it can not hurt. having them for a "friend" is a good thing too. We live in a great neighborhood, have many friends and they do keep watch on our house.

..but the bad guys come after all are asleep .......when we were robbed, (we returned from our trip the next afternoon) the police came quickly, but never did take finger prints, only drew-out the footprint on my counter....a drawing and measured the size. Maybe i should have offered money.....crooks did not get much.....

I've been in Th a long time and don't get in trouble so no worries there....

There are red boxes all over the city, but unless someone esp wants one for right outside their house they are normally not paid for.

We just happen to have one right behind our house and the local police seem to think its a nice place to hang out and have a chat (quiet and away from the action!). So consequently there is someone there for a large part of the night. Free security guards!

Many friends in CM have told that many of the robberies are committed by ....... uh..uh.... security guards.....

i think 500 bath a month is pretty cheap. not just for security but if you ever have a problem the bib will take the side

of someone that pays them every month.....i think pay them

No, it's widespread. I have seen them all over the city center in Chiang Rai and Hat Yai also. I never paid much attention to them on the Islands. I imagine they are everywhere in Thailand.

How many here are living within a gated community? And were robbed.

We are living in a small one in San Kamphaeng and there was only one occassion where there was a robbery over a year ago. The security firm (which I found to be hopeless, I caught them sleeping many times when coming home late) subsequently lost the contact with our moo baan and now we have a new firm, which are good.

Its okay to know some police , but advise would be not to socialise too many with them ,

get personal or let them know you too good .

If Business related and being a foreigner alone might be a different story and different approach .

But to start drinking alcohol with them ......watch out they might need you first then you need them ....

Today I was joined in the elevator of our high rise condo by a local police officer. I double checked to make sure he wasn't just a rent-a-cop. He got out on one of the top floors, strode to one of those red boxes hung on the wall near the elevator and was removing a booklet (probably to sign) as the doors closed.

We don't have one of those red boxes on my floor. Maybe the residents of that other floor chipped in to pay for one. We have pretty good security in the building and I've never felt the need for police to be in the hallways.

I'm surprised that no one has yet pointed out in this thread that this practice seems like a form of bribery. Are you just paying the police to do what they're suppose to be doing?

I lived in a gated mooban and the only one who suffered a burglary was the police Capt. who lived down my soi....

Had a red box on the house next door and in the 1.5 yrs that I lived there only saw 'em twice.

Several police Generals and "upper management" types as well...didn't seem to deter the predators of the night.

Some believed it was a security guard and his friends..the one who looks like he was the product of a medical experiment gone bad, ya know..that ting tong look, well, they fired him ... that lasted about 1 month and then he was back.

I'm not sure bribery is the right word. Extortion seems more applicable.

at my previous house my landlord paid the police for the box and the patrol. they came by infrequently and only during the daytime so i'm sure the cop wouldn't have kept any burglars away. but the red box itself might have helped. just one more reason to choose another house instead.

Funny enough there have only been two burglaries that I know of in the moo baan where I stay, one was again a police Captain's house the other was the main office near the hut where the security guard guards/sleeps
