I am looking for an online broker or industry regulated list of brokers. I am looking to deal as offshore so would also like to know what the situation with taxes is. It would be helpful if they dealt with a wide range of funds eg Morningstar list

I've been using Janus for 20-odd years. I don't know about using them off shore, don't think they'll do that. Also, I think if you are not American you cannot do business with them. Back in the late 90's during the last boom, I did have to pay capital gain taxes, no big deal though. Over the years they have done well for me.

Thanks. I'm from the UK and was concerned about the taxes angle. I get the feeling that I will probably end up dealing with a US firm. Could you tell me what the accepted practice is with taxes in the US; is tax deducted as part of the deal or are you expected to declare it?

Janus furnishes the IRS with information on the dividends and as such I have to declare it as well when I file my tax return and in filing the return any taxes due are determined at that time.
