Sorry, tried Piggys last Friday. Flat tasteless small portion of fish served in a cafe that feels like its in the middle of a formula one circuit theres so much traffic passing by.

Hmm yummy. Fish n Carbon Monoxide poisoning together.

By the way, tried one of their takeaway indian curries. Disgusting! Wouldnt even feed it to the dog!!

Charlies and UN Irish best by far at a reasonable price!

This is such a joke. i feel sorry for someone who's life is so sad that they have to write rubbish like this!

:)

I suspect that there is an ulterior motive here... Trashing people's business is nothing new on this forum.

Charlie makes the best fish & chips and is the most welcoming host in Chiang Mai.

The food, atmosphere and friendliness are top quality. Farangs actually speak with each other at Charlie's.

Others may try to copy, but Charlie has a wealth of experience and that can't be beaten.

Totally agree with you here. Unfortunately the people who vote for Piggy's and others are not British (nothing wrong with that) it's just they do not understand what F & C should be.

If you think the only decent F & C's are to be found in Britain it would seem that you have not done a lot of traveling. :)

Australia & New Zealand have some of the best in the world, and, also some of the best fish varieties. Blue (and red) cod, snapper, john dory, sole, flounder and, more.

I was gonna have some of Charlie's a few days back but the place always seems shut. What's the go there ?

I think that if you check to see what everyone else has done, or voted for, you thereby cancel your opportunity to vote....maybe

Correct Gonzo :) There are only 48 votes from a total of 80, so 32 null votes, and as a poll is rather useless, as it is not indicative of a true vote.

It would seem that the places that come out ahead are those specialising in Fish and Chips.

These good basic places, serve good fish and chips, plus the price is OK. Other places/pubs that have Fish and Chips on the menu are hoping to get business from tourists I think rather than regulars judging by their prices, which are twice as much in some cases and the quality not as good.

I guess not too many tourists will find Charlies, Piggies or The Rose Guesthouse.....thankfully. :)

The Irish Pup does a lovely bit of fish and it's a real generous piece too. I would recommend anyone to try it if they haven't yet done so. But to be honest, I have to say that Piggys is the tastiest plate of Fish & Chips for me as its more akin to the local chippie back home. The Irish bar tastes typically like Pub grub, and like most pub grub it comes with French fries and a side salad. Nothing wrong with that of course, but it ain't the 'Fish & Chip shop' flavour or experience.

Aitch

I agree. For the poll or "contest" as it may be, to really mean anything, all of the members voting would have had to have tried the fish and chips at all of the establishments listed in the poll and then cast their vote for what they perceive to be the "best" in their opinion. As it stands members are basically voting for either Piggy's because they are the new kids on the block and have enjoyed a fair amount of advertising lately, or for Charlies which has been around for long time and many have eaten there before. The Dukes only has 2 votes - come on... I suspect that many have not had the F&C there. I have never heard of Rose Guest House (4 votes) or West (2 votes) before, so I can't vote for them although they may have better F&C than Piggy's, The Dukes or Charlies of which I have been to all 3 several times. Also, people have raved about the food at Pun Pun (1 vote) but many voting have not been there either.

So the poll seems useless (with no disrespect to U.G.).

No. Kevin asked to be taken off, because he has been forbidden from even mentioning his restaurant on Thai Visa any more. Some posters feel that his stories are a form of "free advertising" and resent him posting here.

Personally, I enjoyed his stories and could care less if he is paying to advertise. They were all about his daily life , so not bringing up his business puts a real crimp in his style. I hope that he will stick around anyway.

it's very sad that people have been complaining about kevins posts, always found them very entertaining, maybe we should have a new thread, kevin hunt for super moderator? anybody for that one ? :)

I enjoy his stories and have told him so - he has a funny way with words; but posters are right, he was going for self promotion. I did not complain to a mod but sent him a pm. The only responses - several - were just examples of more flaming so I ignored them in the end.

The mods were right in my view. The guy has one hel_l of a chip on his shoulder ( pun intended)

He could have retained his business' name in the poll and just refrained from posting. He chose not to.

Back to the poll;

F&C in pubs is enjoyable not because of the quality ( ususally french fries not chips, small portions, bit of salad) but because of the ambience and enjoying a few beers at the same times. Pubs dont pretend to be chippies.

As far as chippies go, piggys outperforms because she uses a good "beer" batter, you can taste the difference from other chippies. The price is more reasonable though the portion sizes are going down a bit. But all businesses do that after they get started.

My vote would be for piggys

You certainly have a point, but it applies to almost any food poll on Thai Visa as there is no way of knowing if the poster has tried or even heard of all the choices. Actually the same probably goes for most intrernet polls about anything.

However, if someone gets enough positive votes, it at least lets you know they might be worth checking out.

I've been to Charlie's and not only were his f&c and mushy peas excellent, but so was his conversation. He seemed almost to come out of central casting for a workingclass english bloke from the mid 20th century. He has lots of interesting stories to tell about life in England back when. He struck me as being a very friendly and shrewd guy. He hasn't been well lately which is, I believe, the reason for the irregular hours of his restaurant. I hope he makes a full recovery soon.

I've certainly learned about a lot of places I want to try out when I return to Thailand this winter. I'm a cheap charlie who eats mostly Thai food, but it's nice to try new places, and especially so if I go with someone or meet someone new. Dining alone isn't much fun and my girl friends all like the super hot Thai food.

I have tried Charlie's, Piggy's, and Red Lion. I thought they were all good. Having to pick one, I would have to say Charlie's. I feel they are slightly better in terms of taste, and I like the atmosphere the best.

Is atmosphere a new type of fish :) the question was, who has the best fish & chips ?

Pubs and restaurants most definitely aren't chippies. Never a truer word spoken!!

So as you quite rightly said, if you remove all the non-chippies out of the debate, compared to the rest, Piggy's outperforms them all. My vote would be for Piggy's.

As regards to the diminishing portion sizes - sound business practice! Standard procedure. Couldn't agree with you more.

I'd be hard pushed to think of a business that doesn't reduce portions over time. I always say that you can judge how long a business has been open by how big the portions are.

Big portions?- beginners, won't last with huge portions like that!

Tiny portions? - well established - there for the long run.

The opposite is true of Nouveau Cuisine, of course. They start off tiny and get bigger as time goes by. Never did figure that one out. :)

I already said "I feel they are slightly better in terms of taste", and simply added that I prefer the atmosphere there as well. Is that a problem for you?

Well I have and they are. Oz and kiwi land may have lots of variety of fish but standard fish n chips is ordinary... well at least the many many places I have tried up and down both countries - 15 months Oz, 6 months NZ. I'm sure there are some superb joints but you will not beat Brit F&C anyhwere for consistency and the perfect chip. :)

OMalleys?

I didnt vote as I havent had them all as yet, i need to eat out more.

I've eaten there quite a few times and have to say that the food is highly variable in both quality and cooking. I took some friends there after having had a great meal on my previous visit and I ordered the same thing - and it was terrible! Couldn't believe it came out of the same kitchen!

I don't think their fish & chips qualify to be featured here at all frankly.

(Also I really do wish they'd turn down (or even turn off) the damned CNN and sports channel. Not all customers consider that to be a good dinner environment... You'd never find that in a real Irish bar!)

Oh - Can someone please tell me where to find Pun Pun? I have been unaware of it until reading this forum.

Thanks

Try Pun Pun Guest House. I think that might do it. :)

Thank you - I have found it with help! So for those on this forum who may not know it, here are directions...

If you get on the Rama IX Bridge from town [going east] as you cross the bridge you will see a condo hi rise on the right hand side. As you get off the bridge itself, there is a traffic light. Turn right and the Pun Pun is on your right hand side just before you reach the condo.

I got one for you ole tiger, I took UGs directions (post 20) and ended up at Pinkies. Memory not so good now :) . To my good fortune I met a stunner.

Forget about F&C, the waitress/cook is a heart stopper. One of life's gifts to a mans eyeballs, and bright and friendly. Her name is Chew ( I think) Had a Monti-cristo sandwich, very good. I also met Pinkie, a real charmer. I will be back.
