So You Believe In Free Press?

Featured Replies

Look at the UK , We have freedom of speach to a degree, Now we have no control over any one or anything, We do not have a say in who lives here, who works here, and who cannot stay here,

No news outlet can be perfect, admittedly, but you need a public service type to balance things. If you read the "about us" on Prachatai it sets out to not be under anyones control, except the journalists, board members and most importantly the public,(very simlar to BBC and Channel 4 news UK.who mainly rely on public funding) Many of us "outsiders" can not understand how red/yellow shirts get their huge followings being that BOTH groups are as corrupt as each other. One can only put this down to media control by both parties, and no reliable source to find out "The truth" It's easy to say "oh well,no press is without a politcal agenda" they are all the same. Because as you know there are good and bad,....take for instance The Iraqi ministry of imformation versus Channel 4,.....hmmmm not much difference eh!! :)

Just because I believe in a free press doesn't necessarily mean I want to pay for it :)

I don't beleive any press is free.

They are all owned by someone with a political agenda.

Agreed. And, writers must conform to the standards set by the editor and publisher. NOTHING is free and everything comes with a price... even if it's just sitting on the beach enjoying yourself. Even in Canada where we supposedly have freedom of speech we don't have free press. In Canada our main newspapers are mostly owned by one or two families that have their own agenda. Columnists must conform to the agenda set by the owner. Local municipality newspapers follow pretty much the same format. There's certainly no freedom in Thailand. Everyone is very restricted in what they can print. Break the rules and you go to jail. In backward countries like Iran, Pakistan or Iraq you can lose your life if you print anything that offends someone in power.

Sorry. This contravenes forum rules.

The exception is ThaiVisa.com sponsors, who may reasonably promote themselves.
