I am planning on travelling to Thailand following a visit to Australia. I was planning on arriving in Thailand in April 2010 and wanted to stay for atleast 6 weeks. I have looked at the different visas available and believe that the 60 day tourist visa would be best but it says that it is only valid for 3 months from being granted. I will be in Australia from January so am unsure how I go about applying for it.

Also with the tourist visa exemption for 30 days which can be extended for 15 days how does this work as it says that you have to have proof of onward travel withing the 30 days of entry. If you were intending on extending whilst you were there would it be acceptable to have a flight which departs during the extended time or do you have to book onward travel and then change the date when you are there? Also how many 15 day extensions can you get?

Any advice will be greatly appretiated!

Thanks

You have a few options:

1) Obtain double entry tourist visa from consulate in your country before you travel to Oz, but only use one entry. That will give you 6 months use by period (rather than 3 months on single entry). You will get 60 day permission to stay on entering the Kingdom.

2) Obtain single entry tourist visa whilst in Australia from Thai consulate. You are likely to get more help from an honorary consulate. Perth is a good option if on the west coast. You will get 60 day permission to stay on entering the Kingdom.

3) Use "visa exempt" entry into the Kingdom IF at Oz airport check-in you are in possession of a flight ticket out of Thailand within 30 days of arrival (see below). Your travel itinerary may not allow that, in which case you would need to be in possession of a tourist visa or your airline may refuse to allow you to board your flight.

If using pre-booked flight for trip to neighbouring country within 30 days of arrival (see 3 above), on re-entry to the Kingdom you would get another 30 day visa exempt permission to stay on arrival. That would give you 60 days stay overall. A 30 day visa exempt permission to stay can be extended once for 7 days at immigration with a ticket out of the country if you needed a few more days. The fee is 1900 baht.

Land crossings will only give you a 15 day visa exempt permission to stay, and 4 land crossings will trigger a report to Bangkok immigration for investigation.
