1/ how would i know if the import paper is genuine ? anyone have a example

2/ do i also need a copy of the import lisence, from the shop or person how brought it in oiginally ?

3/ do i need a bill of sale and id or passport copy from the seller ?

Hi there,

Honestly if its a 250cc (or even higher at 650 cc) i wouldn't bother to do it..you can buy 250 & 650 cc already locally made for a relatively good price.

The kawa Ninja 250 Rgoes for 149000 THB, the honda VTR 250 seems to enter the market in the near future too ( it is rumored for about 144000 thb )and the tiger boxer(Tiger Boxer 250rs ) goes for 72000 thb all these you can get new , all legal ,no worries ,no headaches and with spares available too. I do drive the Boxer 250 RS and am very happy with it.

hope that helps,

I recently found a very nice CBR 1300 going for 200k.

No green book of course but it did have 'invoice'.

I asked the guy selling, a dealer, if he could make a green book and what the cost would be.

Maybe 80k he said but 'very difficult'.

If a dealer says this what chance have I got?

Also my wife is good friends with a lady who works in the local dept of Land & Transport.

She said to us not to buy a bike with just the import papers and that the path to registration is fraught with difficulties and in her office nigh on impossible.

Locally many of the guys I see riding the nice bikes with no plates are police or 'connected' hence no tickets!

IMO a farang riding around on a nice bike but no plates is just inviting a ticket or worse.

Yer i know but i think that option 4 is the easiest for this guy. Lets face it getting green books for imports is a very difficult and grey area. We know have Ninja 250's on the 2nd hand market for 100,000b up that are completely legal and most still with warranty. No brainer really. If you find a 2nd hand bike with a book then cool go for it but one without is just asking for trouble now.

Buying a 250cc motorcycle without plates is asking for trouble, likely the bike is stolen or the paperwork is not complete. Currently it costs 600 or 900 Baht (please correct me if I'm wrong) to register a motorcycle not over 250cc, so why would somebody try to sell a motorcycle without plate and registering paper, and get serious less value for its motorcycle.

You have to have a very bad cold to not smell this deal stinks.... I would say not even consider buying

  • 4 weeks later...
I called one of the bike shops in BKK, and they have no green book too, but they said no need to worry as they have the red plate on bike and also receipt for excise tax, hmm, is that right? Will I get into trouble if there is police check?

Erm... red plates do not exist for motorcycles in Bangkok... :) Was it Teera? :D

Is that so? This shop has many used bikes imported from Japan. I frankly don't know what is going on, but I think he means he can put a red plate on the bike so I can travel around thailand, and together with the excise tax receipt, I should not have any problem with the authorities.

NO,NO,NO. The shop is talking <deleted>. If you do not have Green book you can be mucked about by the police no end. The red plate is a tempory plate for use no longer than 90 days if i remember.

ONLY buy a 2nd hand bike with a white plate and green book. If its new and from one of the brand shops(Yamaha etc) then ok for purchase invoice until the green book and plate arrive from the DMV (about 3-6 weeks)

WHAT bike do you want to buy anyway?

You've been warned. Up to you. Good luck!

Red plates with book can be used for max 90 days. Then you need a legal white plate with book, or have (major) problems with authorities.

Don't bother with non-registered bikes. Green book / white plates or nothing. Plenty of used bikes around that are legit, and plenty of new ones on offer that are legitimate as well. If Honda enters the 250cc market with brand new bikes then used ones without green book will become worthless very quickly. Well not worthless, but lose a lot of their value, more than they already have since Kawasaki introduced the KLX.

The shop says come back every 3 months, I think they will change to another red plate. So is this going to be legitimate? And they say can get green book but takes 6 months.

So for those used bikes imported from Japan, are they legit, the bike I am interested in falls into this category.

Well, thaicbr, I am still looking around, trying to gather more info first, but is either cbr 600 f4 or a gsxr 750, any suggestion? What is your pick?

Exactly, I'm always surprised when I see these DRZ400's, 2-3 years old with no book advertised at 200k. I'm not sure who buys these bikes, I'm guessing they remain unsold or are knocked down heavily after viewing...

If it aint got a plate and green book then neither. You will just be giving it to a police man at some point. LITERALLY

What sort of money do you want to spend. Example: Honda 929 100% gen green book. v,good condition 299,000b.

And many more if ya look and ask. i know of about 3 other 4 cylinder sports bikes for sale. a couple of muscle bikes all with green books. Pm me if ya want details.

Hi Johnny, a lot of these imported used bikes are sold to Phuket, down there you can ride with no plate, this was what one seller told me. A guy in Phuket is selling his K3, 2003 gsxr 1000 for 195000 baht, what a steal! but no green book.

I have read it somewhere that even green book can be "fake", in a sense that it belongs to another bike, and you will have problem too. so how to be 100% sure that the green book is the real identity of the bike you are buying.

Secondly, has anyone ever bought a bike with no green book and eventually got it? A genuine one? I mean 100% legal, and with no problem with the authority?

Actually I looked into Teera mocyc as well and some of theirs didnt have the book, but the guy said he could get the book for expensive, or make a "package or documents" that didnt require me to need the book to drive around....

I didnt ask the details and just thought Id not go for it. But lately Ive been seeing alot of cheaper, nice bikes, with only the invoice, and am thinking further....

I saw a beautiful 2004 cbr600 "playboy" white bike, for only 120,000.....

Red plates are no replacement for official green book and white plates. For example, after 20:00 hour you are not allowed to ride on public road with red plates, if the police feels up to it you get a 400 Baht ticket. Also, I believe that a bike with red plates can only have insurance by the red plate owner (the dealer or garage).

I heard about a CB400 going for 10,000 baht.

I live in Chiangmai and the police are not as bad as Pattaya, etc.

If I find a 10 grand big bike, I might buy it and just ride in it in the evenings, and take my chances...

So basically Teera motorcycle is a scamming company?

Hi

Do a seach on TV about them

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Teera-Motorcycles-t188368.html

There is more about them

They do get lot of bad press. However i bought from them (in Bangkok) and no problems at all. Got the paperwork and green book in my name in couple of weeks and also did couple of oil changes etc there and they charged me only for the oil and parts. Labour for free.

That was several years ago so not sure if the same guys are running it still...

At that time they also had some cheaper bikes for sale without books but made it very clear that it means driving with fake plates. Mine was all ok with green book which they transferred to my name so no new books and fixing of frame numbers etc took place. Straight forward ownership change. Since then i have paid my taxes etc for several years without any issues.

Sad is that as i'm working outside for some time now i don't have time to ride it. Anyone looking for a 750cc Magna with low mileage and in good condition let me know as i can't bear to park her much longer without proper use.
