Visa Thailand - I'm Confused

Featured Replies

I'm getting a bit confused. My itinary will be as follows:

* flying to Bangkok (Nov09)

* staying in Thailand for about 3 weeks

* crossing the border to Myanmar (Kentung) for 1 week

* ga back to Thailand and travel for another month

* fly from BKK to Yangon (Myanmar) and stay there for a month

* fly back to BKK and stay there some days

* fly from BKK to Phnom Pen (Cambodia) and stay there for a month

* fly back to BKK, stay there some days and fly back home

Summary: the length of my plane ticket will be 4 months, my length of stay in Thailand will be about 2 months

Which type of visa should I have?

extra info: I'm from Belgium, 32 years old, employed

Every time you fly into Thailand you will get a visa exempt stamp for 30 days.

Crossing a land border will only get you 15 days.

When you come back fist time from Myanmar (Kentung), do you intend to use a land border?

In that case you should get a double entry tourist visa from your nearest consulate.

You could get away with a single entry and try to get a visa exempt stamp in the first entry.

But some immigration officers are grumpy and they might insist to stamp your visa so better get a double entry.

Also the airline might refuse you to board the plane if you don't have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days or a proper visa.

Your airline may not let you fly to Thailand without having either a return airline ticket out of the country within 30 days of arrival to use 'visa exempt' entry or being in possession of a valid visa. With your proposed itinerary you will not have a flight ticket out of Thailand for 2 months, so you need to apply for a tourist visa at local consulate which will give you a 60 day stay. They are currently free until 4th March 2010.

You will only get 15 day permission to stay on re-entering Thailand by land crossing or 30 days if arriving by air within the region using visa exempt permission to stay. That poses a problem for you when re-entering Thailand from Myanmar at land crossing as you plan to stay in Thailand for another 3 weeks before travelling to Rangoon. You will therefore need to obtain a re-entry permit from Thai immigration (cost 1,000 baht) before crossing the border to Myanmar (Kentung). That will keep your 60 day permission to stay alive. Note a re-entry permit does not give you more days.

Thereafter with your travel plan you can use visa exempt entry.

I would obtain a two entry tourist visa. The re-entry permit would cost 1,000 baht and be a PIA and still might not provide him the time required so another visit to Immigration to obtain an extension of stay at another 1,900 baht could be required. The two entry tourist would provide two stays of up to 60 days without need to visit an immigration office.

Hi everyone

Me and my boyfriend are flying to Thailand for cca 13 day. After that we plan to go to Cambodia for 2,5months and return to Thailand for few days before flying home. At consulate they told me that I can't apply for tourist visa - which is free at the moment (as I plan to travel further) and that i need TRANZIT visa for 2 entries (almost 50 dollars). Which I find stupid as I plan at least 13 days of my hollidays in Thailand. I never read anything about tranzit visa here. :)

Also on web they have published that I need photo for documents (I took it) and now they send me that I need bigger photos 4x6. :D

At what Consulate/where? Your passport is?

the actual visa requirement is two passport size photographs. What are your nationalities ?

The airline might refuse you to board the plane if you don't have a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days or a proper visa.

You should be able to get a free tourist visa.

A two and a half month stay in Cambodia for a Slovenian citizen is well over the norm.

I have been to Thailand many times without a return ticket. All you will need is a Multi Entry visa from the Thai Embasy ,

Actually, with any sort of valid visa you do not need ticket out of the country within 30 days to fly.

I know I won't get 2,5 months visa for cambodia, but i know i can extend it plus i plan a short trip to vietnam.

my problem is thailand. consulate in slovenia said i can't get turist visa. i'm from slovenia (europe).

i still don't get it. so you all suggest that i wait until bangkok and than see what happens there?

our photo for documents is 3x4 and not 4x6 :) but i'll just take another pics

TheMinistry of Foreign Affairs website indicates that Slovenian nationals cannot get a tourist visa, but can obtain a visa on arrival from immigration at designated international checkpoints, which will give a 15 day stay with air ticket out of the country. Generally the visa cannot be extended. Fee 1000 baht per visa. http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2482.php?id=2491

The MFA website also talks about transit visas. This type of visa is issued to applicants who wish to enter the Kingdom for the following purposes :

- to travel in transit through the Kingdom in order to proceed to the country of destination or to re-enter his/her own country (category "TS") Fee 800 baht for each entry. Will need air ticket out of the country.

Maybe the consulate has suggested transit visa to you because is cheaper than obtaining visa on arrival?

If there is an Embassy serving the country I am sure they can get a tourist visa - the tourist visa on arrival does not mean they can not obtain a tourist visa - it is an option when there is no local place to get one - it seems there now is a place to get (but they do not want to provide it free).

no. it won't be that.

cos in our country we have consulate and lady told me that they could give me tourist visa if thailand would be my final destination.

until march tourist visa would be free. she said that i have to get tranzit visa (as thailand is not final and only destination)

and tranzit visa need to be paid. I don't want to complicate but i got this bad feeling that they just want the money.

Just apply for a tourist visa, just say you are planning 60 days in Thailand.

No need to tell them about your plans. :)

but i need 87 days than.

but i need 87 days than.

A Tourist Visa gives 60 days. You are only staying in Thailand for 13 days before moving on. When you return to Thailand you will apply for a V.O.A. Giving 15 days. Enough for you.

thank you

than i'll get visa on arrival. as on consulate that won't give me tourist visa (they want copy of my plane ticket so i can't use advice someone wrote: that i don't need to explain my plans)

A Visa on Arrival is also free at the moment.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi

I want everyone to know: After I consulted with all of you. I wrote an e-mail to consulate. I asked for explanation why i can not get turist via and so on... well the result is that I got 1 entry visa - free turist one! I'll get the second one there - the problem was only with 1 entry. So THANK YOU THANK YOU ALL! You just saved me 80 eur! :)
