I am going to Bangkok next week to the British Embassy. Whilst I am there I am planning to go to Pantip Plaza to buy some ethernet bits and pieces for the PC. I know they have all that sort of thing, but can someone please tell me if they also have the Dreambox 500s satellite receiver and other bits and pieces for satellite dish comms. If not do you know anywhere near there where there may be a shop with good prices. I could go down to SatthaiTV (or P.Phone as I think its known) - but its over by the river - quite a distance really.

Thanks for your help.

i have bought two dreamboxes from satthai on the net and both have been delivered no problem to ubon and are genuine boxes. very good service, easier than trapsing all over Bangkok.

No dreamboxes in Pantip.

Indeed Satthai stocks them, transfer money to his account, fax him the slip, and if done before lunchtime gets shipped the very same day.

Currently 3,500 Baht.

Friend brought one over from China, tad under 1000 Baht over there :)

Thanks for the feedback.

Its good advice, but I fancied doing something a bit 'different'.

My wifes family are coming to stay for a couple of days - about 6 of them - so as I had to go to the Embassy anyway I thought I would make a day of it. Maybe even 2 days - anything to avoid all that karaoke singing in the garden :)

So buying some computer hardware and some satellite stuff seems bliss by comparison.

I suppose that shop thats listed on the Satthai website has everything there in the shop as as well (P.Phone) - or is it all held elsewhere???

Sorry to sort of hijack your thread, but I just Googled dreambox and could not really make any sense of the results. Is Dreambox something one can purchase to receive more channels? what channels does it receive and doe one have to subscribe to some sort of service provider? Thanks for any enlightenment

No problem - this may help

Basically there are quite a few different models. The basic model is a Dreambox 500s. The 's' stands for satellite. I have a satellite dish in the garden and the Dreambox 500s will act as the receiver. Connect it to the dish and it will display programmes on my TV.

Additionally - and more importantly for most of us wanting to use this type of 'box' - is that it will connect to the internet.

This enables the receiver to access certain types of information from servers outside my house. Naturally I would never use it for anything illegal, but it can be used to download such things as 'license keys' for viewing programmes that normally require a card to access.

It could therefore access a site outside my house every 6 seconds or so to get this 'license key' information.

Some people receive Muitichoice/DSTV in this way without paying for the DSTV 'card' that would need to be bought and inserted into the 'normal' receiver that does not have the internet facility of the DM500s.

As I say - this is illegal - and cannot be discussed on TV.

Funny about that! that is the page I couldn't make any sense of. subsequent to making my earlier post I searched the forum and now realize I need a satellite dish and my condo does not allow them. I do however have UBC and was wondering if I put my UBC card in the Dreambox, will I have access to more channels??

I was editing my reply above when you posted this - so maybe the additional information in my reply above may help. The way I would be using the Deambox 500s would not require using any card.

I am not an expert on this and all my research has been based on the Dreambox 500s. As I said above the 's' stands for satellite. There is a Dreambox 500c - the 'c' stands for cable.

If you plug your UBC card into the receiver - you should continue to receive UBC. However, the additional channels - if any - you may be able to receive depends on what is on that cable. I suspect you will get only UBC.

Do you have any more information.

In my case as I have a satellite dish I can move the dish and receive different satellites.

You now need an expert to guide you through the technical minefield. Good luck.

There are several on this forum, I am sure Monty will be able to help you further.

Here are some of the receivers you can purchase with different functions.

I have a dreambox 7020s.

There is a small problem with using smart cards in the "soft" card slots.

They will work for a while but do not seem to get updated from the supplier.

It is necessary to have CAM installed to get the update.

Whether this will apply to UBC/True cards I have no idea.
