Hi,

maybe someone can help me.

i have a LED sign (model No.: 3-VW-N000010, 16x128 P10 Acrylic)

from the company www.civicmedia.com

i need the wire for programming it and i already ask them,

but they don't want give me that wire. the company said:

we can send a technician with a Service Charge and the wire for over 4000 baht.

of course, that's a mess, because its a simple telephone line cable(4wires), with 2 serial

ports on the ends. price approx. 300 baht :)

1 end goes to com1 or com2 (PC) and the other to the LED sign.

the only information i need is a diagram, about the pin assignment for

the serial connectors.

can someone help me in this case?

thank you

Is it a DB9 (9 pin connector) or DB25 (25 pin) or one of each type on each end?

DB9, the main signals are 2 & 3 for transmit and receive and pin 5 ground (common to both ends). Now the issue is if it is a DTE or DCE. Without getting more technical then I already have, A DTE to DCE device the pins 2 & 3 go directly to both connectors along with 5. If DTE to DTE or DCE to DCE then you need to cross the xmit/rcv lines. So, pin 2 on one connector goes to pin 3 on the other and pin 3 on one goes to 2 on the other.

Straight through (DTE - DCE)

2 ----- 2

3 ----- 3

5 ----- 5

Cross over cable (DTE - DTE)

2 ------ 3

3 ------ 2

5 ------ 5

The 4th wire may not be used or it may be a DSR/DTR data set ready/data terminal ready signal.

wow, thanks a lot, ill try that.

Its a DB9 (9 pin connector) on each end, i hope.

the end which goes to the PC, was cut.

my theorie:

a technician must come, to program it, after that he cuts the end

which goes to the PC, so no one knows what to use for programing it

and they make money with it. barefaced costs of course.

Hi Tywais,

i noticed that my laptop has only a paralell port DB25 (25 pin) where i can

connect a printer and USB Ports of course.

do you know the pin assignment for that connector, or will an adapter works with USB.

i saw that in a computer shop. 1 end has a serial port DB9 (9 pin connector) and the other

an USB connector.

or could this work?

ebay USB 2.0 zu Seriell RS232 Adapter

ebay PCMCIA an 1 x seriellem RS232 COM-Port Adapter

You can pick up USB to RS232 adapters for about 800-1000 baht in a computer shop. It will come with a driver disk and it will work exactly the same as a fixed comm port on a PC with the exact same pin outs. Curious as to if you have specific software to connect to the display or going to use Hyperterminal.

BTW: I have been using a few of the USB-RS232 adapters at work with no problems. They work as advertised. :)

there is a software (VMS Edit Version 1.13) for download on their website

Civic Media Download

under PC settings > Communication, there is a choice of "Serial Ports"

from COM1 - COM16 or MODEM 56k.

Looks good then. After you install the USB-RS232 driver, just go to the Hardware Manager to verify what comm port it installed under and set the software to match it.

yes, thanks.

there is a lot of software for download and im not sure.

do you know, if VMS Edit the correct version for that model?

I have to say I'm not familiar with VMS Edit in this context. When I was managing DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) computers, the operating system was VMS and the editor was VMS Edit. Never heard of it used in any other way so can't help with that. Actually Googling VMS Edit comes up with nearly all hits based on the VMS operating system.

shit..still can't connect to the LED sign.

i bought an USB-RS232 converter.

in the Hardware Manager its COM1 and i matched this COM Port in the software.

(VMS Edit). there was no driver disk with it, but i see it in the Hardware Manager

as COM Port CA-42 COM1.

i tried the serial straight through and the cross over cable.

it always says "unconnected"

there is also a LAN Port and a PS/2 Port on the board.

i tried a LAN cable, but nothing happens, i mean the NIC gets no IP.

there are jumpers on the board, is it possible to switch them to an offline mode?

so maybe the LAN or serial Port is offline?

there is also a "control setup" where i can setup connections with a communication port and an ip address

and another port number. i leave the ip address to 0.0.0.0 and configured serial Port.

have anyone experience with that sign or with this software?

i made also screenshots, please find attachments.
