Old Croc
In the future airline seating configurations may be completely different from today's layouts: Seating
Dontdisturb
Should the future come soon, a proper space to sleep would be very appreciated.
awd
The way human's are increasing in size and mass, I'd be more concerned about the future sizes of the doors than the seats!
Bobr
One of the most simple and low cost things they could do to improve safety would be to have all seats face towards the rear of the airplane. That way in relatively low speed accident such as at take off and landing you would be pushed into your seat instead of thrown out of it. It's been tried but people whined too much. alyx
Some low cost carrier did plan, a year ago, but dropped the study, to have the people standing during the short haul flights (with an inclination of 20/30 degrees)....
bkkmick
You think that's bad? Ryan Air wants passengers to sit on stools!
billp
I'd prefer to stand.
alyx
I'd prefer to stand. Well some of us would rather seat, I assure you. But joke set apart, I don't see what would stop the airlines from adopting the way the army is/used to flying its boys (sitting next to each other with their bags at hands ready to jump)
toptuan
Before the fall of the Soviet Union, Aeroflot was reported to have hand straps hanging from the ceiling above the aisles on their aircraft--for overflow passengers who stood after the seating was already filled. TomBombadil
But certainly not from Moscow to Bangkok in the 80s.
alyx
I used to fly Aeroflot in those times and apart from the freezing cold inside the plane after the light were off , and the very poor service offered by unattractice staff, never noticed anything like that so this should fit the Urban legends

I know what you're saying but everyone would struggle with the holding their heads up during take off bit, as well as the pressure against the seatbelt unless all seats had the over shoulder type, or there were some radical seat design change like having them reclined a long way. There would also be more sickness (like sitting the wrong way on a train) plus people would probably be more apprehensive because the airline posits that it might crash. How about forward-facing for take off, a bit of musical chairs mid-flight and then aft-facing for landing?
