Thais can view 'Jupiter' with bare eyes in April

BANGKOK: -- Thai people are fortunately able to witness the 'Jupiter'--the largest planet in the Universe--with their bare eyes throughout this month, according to the Astronomical Association of Thailand.

"Throughout this month, April, Thais are able to view the Jupiter with their bare eyes at night whenever the weather condition is good with no thick clouds and rain, by turning to the East and looking for the brightest star in the sky at the moment", the association's secretary-general, Ms. Prapee Viraporn, told TNA on Wednesday.

Ms. Prapee said, however, that people in Thailand could view the clearest Jupiter on 4 April.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun, with its size more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined, or 318 times larger than the Earth.

Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the sky after the Sun, the Moon and the Venus.

Ms. Prapee affirmed that Thais would not be able to view a new solar eclipse on 9 April, as earlier speculated by media.

"People in countries near the Pacific Ocean will be able to view the new solar eclipse later this week, but Thais can't view it this time", she noted.

Ms. Prapee also disclosed that Thai people would be able to view the Venus in mid 2012.

It basically follows the path of the sun (the ecliptic) so look in the same place/path you see the sun move across the sky during the day. I think it rises about 9:30pm to 10:00pm Thailand time. If you look for it above the Eastern Horizon around 10:00pm, it is the brightest object in that part of the sky at that time (by far) and quite easy to spot.

Maybe the Thais have got better eye sight...even so it seems that even they won`t be able to see the eclipse.

No this is just for Thais of course.

If Jupiter doesn't rise until after 10pm then what is that very bright object high up in the eastern sky at 8pm? Venus perhaps?

Nope. There are many planets in the Universe that are much bigger than Jupiter. Jupiter is merely the biggest in our own solar system.

It's not the fourth brightest object in the sky either.
