Open Office Versus Microsoft Office

Hey

Last month I received a notice that my Microsoft office version was a copy ans was told to buy a new one

Not willing to do so as I did not purchase a copy on purpose I decided to switch to Open Office, thanks to a TV member, and I am quite happy about it for the limited use I have of the product

Unfortunately, this is the second time this week, that I ahve received an attached document and haven't been able to open them getting the "microsoft Workpoint or Microsoft office is the available source to solve this problem"

Am I doing something wrong as the features are the same on both sources? Should I do something else? Or is it normal?

I really do not want to buy a Microsoft version as I feel that I have been cheated, of course by the salesman, but also by microsoft who do not recognise that

Any help will be appreciated

Thanks

Can you give any more information about the files that will not open?

Document Type - word / excel / Powerpoint

What is the file extension?

Do you inow what version of office it was created with?

You think you're being cheated by Microsoft since you bought an illegal copy of a rip-off of their property?

How exactly is that Microsoft's fault?

Off topic but I will answer

on their site they offer to replace for free the pirated copy: they ask for the cd, and show which cds will be rejected

Since I have bought the computer this way I do not see how I can do this

Since the shop where I have bought it has long closed I don't see how I can do this

Since I made an honest buy why should I be held responsible?

On a different level , I do not buy anything from Sony anymore: Some years ago I bought the smallest and first ever computer with integrated camera, even before it hit the Thailand at a prohibitive price od 94,000 baht.

I returned the computer three times to the factory because of the problems with the webcam on a one year period

I went on holidays leaving the computer at home, came back three months later. The same problem again: sorry no more guarantee

That was it . I ended up throwing this thing away

I know you can argue all you want that it is a different situation and that Microsoft cannot be held responsible but last I heard they were doing quite well and should give the benefice of the doubt to the consummer who provides sufficient informations. The same goes for the customs when you provide the right information they might be lenient

But now can you go back to the topic and answer my question?

Thanks

These files should open OK with no problem

I guess that you are trying to open the files by double clicking on them, and not from within Open Office using the File - Open command. Your problem is that that your operating system (XP, Vista or windows 7?) still thinks they should be openend with Microsfot Office and is returning the error message.

To solve this you need to "right click the file and select Open with.

You will then be given a list of programs to choose from whihc may or maynot include Open Office in the list of Recomended programs. If it does not include Open Office, then click "Other programs and a much longer list will apear that includes OPen Office. Select OPen Office and then be sure to place a tick in the "Always use the slected program box" Then click OK.

Now everytim you click that type of program it should open with Open Office. You will need to do this with each type of the Microsoft offcie programs (Word Excel, Powerpoint) etc.

If you want to always save your programs in Microsoft format to send to other then follow these instructions

Hope this is all clear,

I get a problem with people using MS Word trying to open a MS Works or Open Office file that I have sent as an attachment...they're saying that the file won't open in Word. Don't understand this as all three are supposed to be mutually compatible...

usually end up resending as a .pdf attachment... :)

To be able to open an Open Office Document in word, you need to make sure it is saved in MS word format (.dox)

Open Office will open all major formats, but Word will only open documents in formats it understands, and the default open Office is not one of them, thus you have to save the file in MS format.

See the above link as to how to set this as the default action

I have changed the default save to all MS compatible files. Open the Writer and click tools, options, Microsoft Office and check the right box for all the programs. When you send a file it will open with MS Office.

I think the most recent version of Open Office is 3.1.1.

Alyx, you like to think only what you think. For example, you say it's "off topic", even though you brought it up.

If all you are interested in is being able to read "Office" type documents sent to you as attachments then get official Microsoft readers here:

Word

Excel

Power Point

It's very good of you to post these. I have often used the PowerPoint reader when going to meetings, and recently used the Word reader during my move when I was without my main computer and software.
