Vat tax refund at airport bangkok

Featured Replies

The way it's supposed to work is that you get your receipts stamped at the store, then at the airport you get re-imbursed for the money you paid in V.A.T. But not, apparently, if you are a Thai-borne American. At least

that is what we found. In this case, my wife is Thai and changed her citizenship to American and was travelling on an American passport . She was at the point where they tell you to go get the money, when the official

unexplicably snatched the form back with the explaination that "you were born in Thailand - so you don't get to claim V.A.T. reimbursement". I wasn't there, otherwise would have questioned it this way...

Thai parents, borne overseas, foreign passport (if borne in America, could carry American passport) - eligible?

So I don't know the rules. Anyone with similar experience?

Forget it. TiT.

This official deserves a quick promotion to EUNUCH status.

Had a similar problem with khun wife but I was with her and receipts were on credit cards which helped.

Really its up to you next time...as said and I dont like the statement TIT.It does not do any favours for the country. :o

I tried this about a month ago and got a cold no because my items werent for vat refund...???!!! It was a load of crap but could not be bothered to argue.

Can I try again...? I dont recall my receipts being stamped in any way...? Is it only from certain stores that this is true...? I guess anywhere which puts V.A.T extras on the receipt.

This is a mad one but is there a time frame you can get the V.A.T back on..? If not this year I am keeping everything!!

Just read that you only get it back on purchases over 5000 baht inc VAT!!

Is this right... I knew there was something

You were thinking hotel bills, bar girl bills, your restaurant bills and so on :D

Its about valuable consumer goods bought in certain shops. Also you have to have the goods on you. I thought about buying a watch and let my dad claim vat back when he went back. NO way.

ahh did they ask to see it huh...? Strange that they would though as most people would put their bought goods not in their hand luggage but main suitcase which they probably dont have on them, unless the VAT stand is before immo, which if I remember is like that in Chiang Mai.

Good idea though
