South Pattaya Market Vendors Look To The Mayor For Help After Eviction Notice Is Served On Them.

Featured Replies

Pattaya, November 18 [PATTAYA ONE NEWS] : On Wednesday Morning at Pattaya City Hall, Khun Itipon, the Mayor of Pattaya chaired a meeting of market vendors who are currently based at the Chaimongkon Temple Market on the South Pattaya Road. 44 vendors have been issued with notices by the owner of the Market that they have a period of 30 days to vacate the area as the market is due to be closed down. Although the eviction notice was issued in accordance with the law, the vendors appealed to the Mayor to either speak with the market owners or ask them to extend the eviction date or to help them to find an alternative location for them to continue their business. The Mayor confirmed that he will attempt to contact the market owners to see if they have sold the land or are just unhappy with the current vendors and will work with the group to try and come to a satisfactory conclusion.

I hope this does not herald the end of this market.

Yeah this is a great market. It seems from the article it is due to be closed. Anyone have any more details?

Be great for traffic flow if it does shut!! But only 44 vendors facing eviction does not sound like it is shutting, there is a lot more than 44 vendors in there??

Traffic flow? That market has been there a lot longer than you have been here, I would guess. It is a good market and I do a lot of shopping in there - mainly for vegetables. My Thai family shop there and so do many other Thais - gee, let me guess: more shophouses or another hotel?

We (well, my wife at my prompting) spoke to one stallholder at length this morning - apparently the market owner, having originally "donated" the market to the City (remember they spruced it up and put a new roof on it a couple of years ago?), somehow still has the ability to put rents up, through the (new) roof apparently, and the city agreed with the stallholders and objected to the rent rises, and the case is heading for the courts, according to one stallholder.

Whether that is because of the presumably ineffective land donation or what I have no diea.

Apparently, the owner wants to build a MULTI STOREY CAR PARK on the site, although for many reasons that sounds absurd! It could all be a ploy to get more money from the city/tenants, or both.

Some of this may be inaccurate but that is what we were told today.

But anyway, the people who work there are rightly unhappy about this unwelcome development.

Depends on what type of contracts they have, civil case.
