April 11, 200521 yr anybody knows where they play alternative rock music at BKK ? and I dont mean places like Hard Rock Cafe or the notorious MetalZone.....I rather prefer to go to local Places, not Farang places (even I like to mix-Up with decent Farang too) .....anybody is very familiar with the local music scene and can give advice ? thanks
April 11, 200521 yr not many to be found, sadly. but here's an interesting article: http://www.bangkokrecorder.com/?p=redakt.a...=9&ArtikelID=39 also, there's a weekly mailing list going around called Roll Call which lists shows, parties, concerts, etc... that caters to a more "alternative" culture. send an email to [email protected] with the subject header "Add".
April 11, 200521 yr not many to be found, sadly. but here's an interesting article: Agreed, unfortunately all the Asian alt/punk/hc stuff is in Japan, though there is an emerging scene in China right now (check out Reflector).
April 11, 200521 yr Immortal Bar in the Bayon building on KSrd has a rock night every Friday or Saturday (I can't remember which) Although the owner is a big metalhead for some odd reason he only has rock on once a week. Maybe he doesn't realise that he could still fill the place playing rock and that not all travellers like only hip hop, house and reggae. Its very odd that one of the World's most popular genres of music is so poorly represented in Thailand. There is a scene but its still underground and can take some sniffing out but once you're there its quite an active scene and yu can have some memorable times. One difference between Thai rockers and their Western counterparts is that Thai rockers seem not to be tied to their music and seem just as happy going to a techno club than they would a rock club. Immortal Bar is as good a starting point as any to find out where the scene is. To get my fill I tend to take my own music to bars I frequent regularly and get them to stick some on. Also theres always TQ2 in Pattaya if all else fails!!
April 11, 200521 yr Good thread, let's keep it going. I'm into Gothic and Industrial Rock. We need a change from the same old music played all over the country. Anybody have any suggestions
April 11, 200521 yr Good thread, let's keep it going.I'm into Gothic and Industrial Rock. We need a change from the same old music played all over the country. Anybody have any suggestions <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Have you chequed a thai band called "Futon"?. I saw them playing last month and ws greatly impressed. They just recruited the drummer of the dissappeared Suede. A really refreshing band in the usual boring and predictable Thailand music scene. Bull
April 12, 200521 yr Here's a few of links to some mp3's from Thai "Alternative rock" bands (sound quality not great but you get the idea): The Eastbound Downers - Downer's Grove From the Makers of Casablanca - Pink Eyes Brand New Sunset - On the Other Side Crux - Broken Mirrors Stage Clear - Fool Against the Truth There's more but I'm lazy today.
April 13, 200521 yr I have a thai nephew that is really into sonic youth, art "noise" type stuff...i'll ask him about the local scene when i see him next.
April 13, 200521 yr Bangkokrecorder has a link somewhere to the monthly dudesweet parties that play a lot of alternative indie/rock music, libertines, suede, snowpatrol etc.
May 1, 200521 yr Author hmmmm......I wonder why no club has an "indie night" or "alternative night", even it would be on a weekday.....we have a lot of that in Germany.....and those places are usually crowded with people....... maybe talk to a bar/Pub owner here at BKK....and bring on my 1200 alternative rock - CDs....... I think such a weekly Indie/Alternative night could attract both Falang and LOS-people
