Retirement anywhere involves a major change of lifestyle.

People who haven't been able to fill in their day in their own country may not be able to do so in Thailand either.

I suspect other retirees who have come here, married younger women, and started new families may occasionally cast an envious glance towards those they consider to be bored.

Re OP thread; (hello!). I enjoy reading Sticky's stories, Monday mornings on the throne etc.

I guess the attraction to his site for bored old retiree's is quite simple to be honest. Black background with white large font! It's the only site some can read clearly! (pro tip for stickman - think of change of style).

That is all.

Is it not true that the amount of time spent on Thaivisa is surely one measure of boredom.
All true and possible but the subject is retired foreigners in Thailand hence many of the categories mentioned don't really apply.

How can you know just looking at the amount of time spent on Thaivisa if a member is retired or not?

Actually I believe he's a member, or has an impersonator.

He is a member and probably had most popular website in Thailand for many years until some jealous wanke_r screwed it all up for him. :D A sad story really.

Ohhh you must be talking about Keith Summers :) ....so scarey.

Type A personalities don't retire well but these days it seems there are very few around! The other category you describe, well, what can be said, a person makes their own bed so ...

As I said, it's ONE measure. But actually, that's one measure of boredom and not one measure of judging whether someone is retired!

So what's the deal? Is the guy that handles the site the original or did someone else takeover? I used to read some of the articles but, now spend alot more time here so don't bother. Anyway, seems to me if you're bored in Thailand, you would be bored anywhere.

Looking at the expatriate community in Thailand (ie all foreigners living here), I beleive that retirees account for a higher proportion than say in Singapore or HK or UK or Australia most other countries. After all there is a category of visa especially for retirees, which is quite easy to qualify for, compared to elsewhere. Little wonder that there are so many retirees here.

As to whether they are bored I think there may be some level of intellectual boredom. After all if you look at the education level of many of the thai wives compared to their retired husbands, there is only that much pidgin English small talk that anyone (retired or otherwise) can take. Compared to that, Thai Visa and Stickman offers something more familiar and perhaps even a replacement for the "missing bits" in the retiree's otherwise blissful home lives.

Many foreigners I meet in Pattaya have a Thai spouse and there are very few who can carry on a decent conversation of anything vaguely interesting (could be cultural and language barriers too), which is no big deal for me as I do not live with them 24/7.

But of course I generalise.

Besides, I must bored; that's why I am posting here in this thread. I am normally on Thaivisa if I need an answer to some issue or in between television programs or just plain bored. And often I get side tracked by threads like these! Never a dull moment here.

It could be that you are one of them and you want to belong to that, but certainly: The majority of the farang population here is NOT old retired geezers

I've always found work to be rather boring. The only difference is at work I am busy being bored.

:D Good one Scott, Everything is a mind game, I've been retired here for 4 years and never been bored. I do anything that tickles. I go to a cafe to talk with the tourists a few nights a week and listen to their stories from the "real" world and say to myself "thank God I am where I am." Thailand is a challenge for any farange. Only the strong survive to enjoy the wonders of its amazing people, food and countryside. I believe it is the spirit of the country that keeps this old "coffin dodger" interested to hang around for awhile longer :) .

The eye candy alone is worth a few more years :D .

This post is just a blatant attempt to drum up support for stickman (SM) site because Thai Visa is kicking that site arse now.

The moderators should have shut this post down as soon as it was posted.

TV has grown in the biggest forum in Thailand and someone wants a piece of TV success for free. Bullocks I say.

That being said, there is allot of excellent info here on TV and some gents that are really knowledgeable in their areas.

The leads to people building their own houses in Isaan is great (Need an english TV show for that "Billy Bob builds in Isaan" what a crack that would but in all seriousness we all learn alot from each others mistakes.

There are some real visa experts here as well as many other subjects.

If you want to stay in Thailand, keep up of trouble and stay up on everything current so you won't get ripped off, TV is the only place to be.

It's a dam_n shame we could not harness all the experience, education and members here to get a voice into the current govt. to ease up regulations for retiree's, married and legitimate business owners.

Apart from money the main requirements are ability to occupy yourself and good health. I count myself fortunate to be okay on all these fronts. I would imagine on the law of averages some ex pats must be bored.

Personally I have no wish to live in Thailand but I like to go on long holidays there. But good luck to all you guys who live there. :)

A joke surely?,TV and Stickman to me are totally different sites, each with their own merits.

"Full" is an exaggeration, whilst I consider "bored out of their minds" a mild understatement for some of these species!

Exactly right...

sadly ıts a very accurate statement. :)

and all the people with lame day jobs that they have been doing for 30 years are not bored ??????

People that work 9 to 5 in their home country have the dullest lives of all, not retired pwoplw living in a foreign country.

If they're bored in Thailand, they'd be bored wherever they are.

Can't say I'm a fan of Stickman, but he's a lot more interesting than that crank Notstickman who tries to be his nemesis but just looks a madman.

Now this is a true statement. The amount of times i've heard expats saying how bored they are and then follow it up with "but i could never go back to......"

You have to find things to do here. We live in a country where people will happily spend ten hours a day watching Korean soaps.

Why would anybody WANT to work,i retired early ,if i could have i would have retired 20 years earlier, life is a blast i am never ever bored ,there is just so much to do ,just open your mind and get on with it.

I think most of the problem is not caused by boredom, but rather that Thailand doesn’t meet up to expectations because of financial reasons.

Many middle aged and elderly retirees come here believing it`s going to be a new start in life, in a hope of rekindling their younger days, wining, dining and some regular hot totty, either in the town or on a more permanent basis as a steady girlfriend or partner.

But soon after settling in Thailand they learn that this country is not the bargain basement it used to be and that socialising, having that dream girlfriend and all the trimmings is for many financially out of reach. Thailand is still the adult playground it is renowned to be, but of course for a price which increases year by year and having to budget their income more and more due to the appalling bank exchange and interest rates.

Many of us end up staying indoors pottering around the house or becoming computer junkies only having enough income for the occasional night out and run the real risk of becoming trapped in a void.

So for those thinking about living in Thailand for the long term or the rest of they’re lives should consider first if they can afford the sort of dream lifestyle that is portrayed about Thailand in the media and tourist information guidebooks.

Stickman has always put himself across as being successful and as having his life completely sorted in Thailand, but when the whistle blower did his blowing, it turned out that he's just another ducker and diver whose living isn't exactly on the level.

He had his day, like Trink. I think most people have moved on. I have.
