A six years old PC has obviously a dead battery. Have to re-set time and date at every start-up.

I thought that time and date are maintained as long the power is connected even if the PC is shut down?

Mother board: ASUS P4PE2-X

Question: When replacing the battery should the PC remain connected to power (but shut down) or unplug it entirely?

I've done it both ways, never had any problems.

It's always a good idea to unplug the power cord, just to be on the safe side.

There is a small time window for doing this - did it twice.. never hada problem always UNPLUG electrical appliances - to beon the safe side!

Thanks for the replies. :)

I just did the battery replacement with PC shut down but connected to the mains.

It's a snap-in type and took only about 5 seconds.

No loss of BIOS settings and time/date remain now correct even after disconnect from power.

Problem solved.
