Massage Procedure?

Featured Replies

Sorry for being so inexperienced! - I have only been to BKK and have never got around to having a Thai massage, what is the procedure in these places, from what I gather you choose which sort of massage you want then go to a room, this is when I am not sure what happens, do you choose who you want to do the massage or is it just who is available? -

You go to a room do you strip complete and wear a robe or towel or leave underwear on? -

Sorry for such simple questions which some people may laugh - I just dont want to make a twit of myself if I dont know! -

Also how can you tell the difference between a place that does just massage to those places that you read about that do extras? Thanks

It all depends on what type of massage....!!!

You don't have to take off all your clothes for a foot massage, a full body massage, requires you to wear underwear with a towel draped over them, if anything the masseuse will let you know. :)

erections are frowned upon. I always make sure I duct tape it although it can whip the hairs off your butt if doesn't hold causing you to scream. also frowned upon :)

For traditional Thai massage, keep on your underwear and put on the supplied pajamas they give you. If you are large, the top won't fit you. In that case, wear a light loose fitting t-shirt. They will massage you with this clothing on. Generally at a respectable traditional massage place, they will suggest a masseur. If there is a choice of men or women, you can specify that. If you are large, I suggest a larger person. If you go there regularly, it is common to call out the same masseur by name if you were happy with the service. It shouldn't be too hard to learn the clues of which massage shops are non-sexual and which are not.

You choose which massage you want and for how long.

You can choose who you want if you know them, or have been recommended.

Depends on the massage you choose.

Oil massage, you shower and use a towel for modesty. Traditional massage and you keep your shorts and T-shirt on.

Look for the more respectable looking places, but this is a guide not a rule.

In any case, a polite refusal will generally suffice.

Ask your hotel for recommendations.

Many of the places which have special look the same as those without. Clues are those without may say Traditional Health Massage. Those with have ball massage listed in their menu. But you can have an ordinary massage at those places with ballmassage too.

:D:D Um, I'm not sure what you think ball massage is...

Ball massage is where Thai herbs are wrapped up in a fabric ball, which is then made hot by placing it in a steam machine, and then is used to massage your back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs.

What did you think it means? :)

As for suggestions on Traditional massage places, Wat Po can be hit or miss, but I've always gotten an acceptable massage there. The most consistent massages have always been from one of the outlets of Healthland. That is usually where you will see the hi-so grandmothers go (one of the ways to judge what kind of massage clinic it is, is by the clientele).

It's not too expensive either, I buy a set of ten massages (2 hour) for 3500 Baht. It's more expensive than some little nameless place, but that is because they have become more of a spa location, and they are very good in keeping their training consistent.

I recommend OP to post his question in Health Forum
