mcgriffith
Very chilly. Great excuse for hi-so folks to parade the latest Berlin and Paris fashion long coats. Thais on motorsai are bundled up like it's the Arctic. Stocking caps, scarves, woolen gloves, 3 layers of clothing. At 10 AM, with the sun out. Wonderful time of year here in Lanna. orang37
What is the normal temperature in Chiang Mai in January? Sawasdee Khrup, Khun Kamp, There is no "normal" ... for expats ... here in Chiang Mai, although we can't help inventing a "fiction" which we actually walk around trying to persuade ourselves (and others) is a "normal" : in our humbleissimo opinions, that is why so many of us live here. But, as far as weather goes in January, our experience has varied greatly over the years; two years ago there was an incredible cold snap (was it two or three years ?) during January. We were in Laos at the time, freezing while doing the visa dance. Had something to do with an unusual cold air mass from China coming down. But, in general, you can expect the great merciless solar engine to begin to exert its strength and all-conquering power by the end of January. But it will be a dry heat, relatively speaking : but with dry heat you get ... dust. And a lot of your subjective discomfort may depend on the level of air-pollution which to us ... last year, in January ... was, subjectively, quite high. http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findwe...st?query=chiang mai&wuSelect=WEATHER is a good site for weather info for Chiang Mai, though we suspect the main weather reporter for Chiang Mai is the elderly man who reads tarot cards on the sidewalk near Pratu Thapae given the general inaccuracy of the predictions. We pray that your current invention of your "normal" brings you happiness and inner peace, and the desire to be kind to others, and a generosity of heart towards our Thai friends and neighbors who are so often kind to us, and accepting of our obviously distorted and unbalanced multiple personalities. best, ~o:37; Edited December 9, 2009 by orang37
WaiWai
I have to say thank youse/you'all for your warming posts, organ37... oops! ... but you might enjoy that slip, so I'll let it slide. kamp, it can feel a little chilly but many of us who've observed ourselves adapting find the change invigorating. As is often the case, it rather depends on the place from which you are coming ...
