Feel Air plans low-cost long-haul service

Scandinavian start-up carrier Feel Air is planning to launch low-cost flights from Stockholm and Oslo to New York and Bangkok next year, and says fares “will be 50 per cent lower than the existing competition”.

The Scandinavian airline is currently in the process of raising US$42 million in capital with DnBNOR Markets, Norway’s largest investment bank, with the aim of launching the routes in spring 2010.

Feel Air says it will use Airbus A330-200 aircraft for the routes, with frequencies weighted towards New York in the summer and Thailand in the winter.

CEO Kai Holmberg believes that the Scandinavian long-haul market is “underserved and unexploited”, and says that Feel Air “is building a Ryanair type cost religion, combined with [an] AirAsiaX operation and business model, wrapped up in a Virgin-style employment and branding philosophy”.

There are no details as yet as to the exact launch date or seating product, but the carrier’s website says the business model “is a familiar (low-cost) one”, where luggage (over and above the first piece), food and entertainment will be charged as extras.

50% cheaper? maybe no food? no drinks? Maybe Fred Flintstone style plane?

50% cheaper than what? There any many different prices from scandinavia to USA and thailand with regular carriers. In low season I have seen prices at around 350 too 400 euro to USA and Thailand.

Air Asia X from London is also not very cheap when you consider all the extras needed.

as they have only 2 airplanes and 4 rountes (New York and Stockholm and Oslo, and Bangkok to Stockholm and Oslo) they won't be flying that regularly, maybe only once a week to each destination. If something gets wrong (broken airplane etc), you would have to wait a week or two for the next flight.

the last year flights from europe to bangkok with regular airlines were as low as £320 including taxes (jet star from London through Mumbay) and were giving up to 35kg hold luggage allowance (and more, if you are a regular flier - for example thai air gives 40kg with silver).

I do always bring to thailand goods for sale and presents to my family and on my way back goods which I do sell in europe. It pays for my airfare or make some profit towards holidays.

Hard to forget as they have had two 747's parked up outside the HAECO hanger at HK airport for months, still carrying the Oasis livery

Interesting.... as my home back in the US is in New York, I am defnately interested in knowing more. I will have to check with them next trip to see what there prices and schedules look like.

most probably there are direct flights with many airlines - and the route through the west cost is shorter, than through europe (10h to oslo and another 8-9h to east coast). Shorter means cheaper.

look at the utilization times proposed for the aircraft. I believe that there is no way that this airline will be able to respond to a major equipment malfunction without stranding PAX. Reminds me of the hype that Iceland's banks used to promote their bubble. Remember Zoom Airlines? same concept. It went under.
