Averatec 1020 Or 1050 Mini-laptop (predecessor Of Netbooks).

Hi All,

I have an Averatec 1050 EB-1 (not the new Averatec N1000 series) and have had what I think is a battery go bad. Machine still runs good on the AC adapter but the battery won't charge even though the power management window in control panel says charging (battery indicator in power window has a diagonal line through it).

Here's the delima:

I received a new battery via eBay transaction and it came with almost 70% charge. I ran the new battery down and now it doesn't charge back up as well. Same situation in power management window and LED battery/power indicator flashes between green and orange", indicating a problem. This is the same as my 3 year old battery and what started this all.

I just visited Pantip and Future Town today and no one can help because they don't have a replacement battery to use to determine if it is a battery or the computer. "Thailand doesn't have this battery", which I believe.

So, if anyone in the Bangkok area has a working model/battery of either of these computers, I would like to meet you somewhere to test my batteries with your machine and/or your battery in my machine. Lunch is on me. All the shops in Pantip that I visited are saying the old and new battery are not good. I would be very happy if this were the case but there is only one way to determine this, either another working machine or spend more money on another battery........which I don't want to do if the machine isn't working right and it might cost more than a new netbook for repair.

Any ideas?????

Thanks everyone!

Martian

I have read your post and to be perfectly honest with you I don't understand the problem

I have two Averatec laptops ( 1050 and 1020 ) primarily because of the "netbook" size with the addition of a DVD / CD RW built in. The 1020 is now being saved for "parts" and the 1050 is used for traveling and was purchased on Ebay for $325 last summer. (in the US) It was in pristine condition and was the reason I paid so much for an "outdated" laptop.

I had the battery on the 1020 re-furbished at a local laptop repair shop here in Pattaya last winter for 2,500 THB. They split the battery case and inserted new "guts" and then glued it back up again and the battery worked OK, not as much of a charge as a new battery but enough for a couple of hours of DVD watching on a plane

Since your A/D adapter works using the laptop plugged in (with the battery removed, something unique with the 1000 series) I think that the problem is with the battery not keeping the charge and not with the Averatec not charging. This should be easy to check by any competent notebook shop just using a voltage tester on the leads in the battery compartment

When you state that the Ebay battery was received with a 70% charge that would be my first concern since it is recommended that batteries be stored with 40-45% charge and if it was shipped to you in Thailand it was probably charged at 100% by the seller and lost 30% during transit

You migh be better off checking the battery level using the battery icon on your task bar vice the one in Control Panel

We all take a chance when we purchase anything on Ebay so my only suggestion would be to purchase a new battery directly from Tri Gem at

http://www.shopaveratec.com/product.aspx?s...p;culture=en-US

They have support in Korea, but since I can't read Korean I don't know if they sell the battery there

Sorry, but a 2 hour bus ride for a free lunch is a non starter

Langsuan Man,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. To help you understand the problem, one cannot assuredly determine if the problem is with the battery or the computer without having either a properly working laptop to insert the suspicious battery into or having a properly working battery to place into the suspicious laptop.

My experience lately has determined that it is not true that a "competent" battery shop can place a multimeter or the such onto the leads of the battery to test the battery and/or the leads coming off the computer to test for any charging voltage output...at least that is what more than 30 shops told me, many of them Battery/Laptop specialty shops at Pantip. I was thinking the same before I departed on the adventure.

The power Icon in the taskbar takes you to the same power management window as the control panel so I really don't understand that point.

I visited the AMON shop (Battery repair specialists among other things) on the fourth floor at Fortune Town on Ratchada and he vehemently said there was no way he could repair the battery because of the internal circuitry. I'm not a battery expert so I have to listen to those (multitudes) who said it couldn't be done. Of course it could also be the Thai thing of least resistance but not one Battery "expert" was willing to help.

Buying a battery directly from Trigem or Averatec USA isn't a guarantee either. In fact after posting my problem on www.fixya.com (enter 'Averatec 1050 EB-1 not charging' and follow the thread) another person responded that they have the same problem AFTER buying a new battery from Averatec.

Buying a battery or anything on eBay does have risks but it is really strange that a battery arrives with a charge and then cannot be charged back up. It is also very possible but against the odds that one would receive a second battery that is bad. I have posted the battery back to the supplier for a full refund with the understanding that bad or not, I get a refund. I have ordered another battery from another supplier with the hopes that it is/was the battery that is the problem.

I understand that traveling 2 hours for a free lunch for many people might be a non-starter. I don't consider Pattaya to be in the Bangkok area but if I were able, I would probably make the trip to help you if the roles were reversed or maybe even offer to meet at a place closer to Pattaya.....but that is just me.

I think we both agree that these machines, although not as advanced or as powerful as some of the newer netbooks, are a gem to own and travel with. Built-in optical drive and 10.6" screen size are perfect and this is why I am wanting to keep my machine running and truly want the problem to be a battery. I hope you enjoy years of service from your 1000 series as I am hoping for with mine!

I'll monitor this thread and post anything new I find out.....maybe this next battery will solve the problem....hopefully!

Thank you for your response and input, it is greatly appreciated.

Regards

  • 2 weeks later...

Problem has been solved.

I sent my 1st replacement battery back and ordered another from a different vendor so they would pass in transit and not be a long wait. The second replacement battery has arrived and is charging correctly. I am currently running it through the 'battery learning" (calibration) program contained within the BIOS and all seems good!

I'm really happy that it turned out to be a battery and thanks again to Langsuan Man for taking the time to reply!

Regards!
