I want to remotely take control of another computer in a different country. One problem I face is that the person at the other end is not terribly computer literate so the easiest way to get them to sort it out is what I'm looking for.

I'm running Vista HP 64bit, they Windows ??? at least XP, probably Vista, I doubt 7.

Thanks

The best solution I've seen is a program called TeamViewer. You can set it up so that it loads at boot and if their computer is turned on and connect to the net you should be able to start a remote session. It's free for non-commercial use. The install is not to hard, I've talked people through it over the phone.

Controlling vista from a remote machine should be easy with the included windows features.

Here is a guide for Vista. XP is similar, but is only available to XP pro users

For XP home or other systems such as remote access to Linux I use NTRconnect. It is easy to use and set up, and their support staff are VERY helpful even during the initial trial period. After the free trial it still works, but some of the more advanced features such as file tranefer are disabled.

To use this system, go to their web page and create an account, then the remote users needs to go to the same page and ad their machine to the account you created created. Once setup you can connect at anytime just by loging on to the acount from any machine.

Another popular option which I have not tried is Logmein

All of the above solutions avoid any problems with NAT or having to open ports on the remote router etc.

I agree. Teamviewer is the easiest to use and it allows you to fully control another computer from your desktop.

Get it HERE

No installation required from both ends. Just run it and get the ID and password.

I see 2 versions of Team Viewer. One seems to suggest it is just a web based thing, which would presumably end when the browser was closed whilst the other seems to be a downloaded program. Have I got this right ?

Also, I do not want the other end to be able to access my PC, only me access their PC.

I use Ultra VNC which is a server/client system so it can be setup for one-way control. I find it pretty straight forward to setup and use.

It's free.

Regarding simplifying it at the other end:

"With addons like SingleClick your customers don't even have to pre-install software or execute complex procedures to get remote helpdesk support. "

It is a one-way process. The other end cannot take control over your computer without you giving him your password.

Just download TeamViewer 5 and you're good to go.

TeamViewer is free for non commercial use but you have to pay for commercial use. If you want to set up a remote help setup for commercial use you can use TightVNC in tandem with VNC reflector , which is the same way TeamViewer works and this setup is all open source and free !

www.Logmein.com...definitely. Been using it for almost a year now......free! Set up an account and then go to the computer or have someone at the computer add the computer to your account and voila!

We use a software called "Radmin" - www.radmin.com. The "host / server" computer license is 50 bucks- the "client / remote" side is free. When installed in conjunction with a free IP service like NO-IP, it works beautifully and gives you control just like sitting at the "host" computer.

You can try the Radmin for 30 days free, then buy the license if it works for you. Give it a try!
