Browser Hijacker -

Featured Replies

That trojan thread reminded me of my little problem. I have a @#%#$% browser hijacker. Half the time I click on a search result I get redirected to some site trying to sell me something.

I have Symnatec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (authentic), Malewarebytes, & Windows Defender. All are up-to-date and none of them have found it. I installed Spybot Search & Destroy but no luck (uninstalled now). Most recently I installed HijackThis and it showed me a long list of things and basically said for each one, "these may or may not be infected". Not much help.

Anyone have any ideas what else I can try?

Which browser are you using?

SuperAntiSpyware

Found things for me that many other programs could not.

I use both IE8 and Firefox. I know for sure it happens on Firefox. If I check the browser history it looks like it isn't happening in IE8 but I can't be sure.

I don't think it's a browser hijack, but the websites have been hijacked, including Google sometime. I get constantly "warnings" and "attacks stopped". Most websites don't have security scripts installed, like PHPID etc.. Sites getting injected in droves, something your common security program can't recognize.

Most of the injection threats are coming from China, Indonesia, Korea, USA, Malaysia, Pakistan and a few others. Data are collected before handed over to law enforcement. Also don't forget when you're a webmaster to install project honey pot, which is successfully fighting spam.

Koheetsi Hi. Have you tried running your AV and anti spyware scans when in safe mode ? some of the trickier ones can only be picked up when in safe mode. To boot into safe mod just keep pressing the F8 button when the computer is booting. Select safe mode and then run your scans. Good luck

The post telling of the "websites" being infected is most likely the cause of your problems. Can you do a full memory and boot record scan on startup(before it boots to desktop) with your anti virus? It takes ages(depending on the size of your drives), but will often find the more deep rooted worms etc. that a normal scan will not. I use Avast Pro on Win 7 and I need to "schedule" this scan to run on next start up. The other thing you could try is to backup your book marks, history and pass words etc. then try deleting all your "cookies and browsing history" in firefox. I use "Xmarks and FEBE" addons for this and I've never lost a thing yet! Checkout the addons under tools in firefox, then browse "all addons" for the latest tools. Try the latest version of firefox too, if you don't already have it. I did have a similar problem for a while, but after updating Firefox and adding some "addons" it went away. Good luck.

Many thanks for that link to "honeypot" elcent. That site contains a lot of really good advice to help fight this kind of web attack. Having read up on how to implement some basic steps, I will be making some changes to my site today. Good one. thebom :)
