On Monday Afternoon, Rescue Services were called to a small Townhouse in Soi Yensabai in South Pattaya to assist a German resident who had fallen through a flat roof as he was attempting to break-into his own house. Mr. Manfred Noever aged 68, sustained head and leg injuries during the fall. He explained to us that he had accidentally locked himself out of his house and attempted to climb onto the roof and enter the house through the 2nd floor balcony door which he thought he could force open. As he climbed up, the corrugated roof gave-way and Mr. Noever fell to the ground. He refused to go the Hospital and was left to nurse his wounds.

I had something like that happen to me. It was quite embarrassing. I hope he makes a full recovery. (And keeps a key with him).

I always use a mortise lock for the main door. You need to use the key to lock the door and cannot lock yourself out, unless you loose the key. In this unlikely event, call the locksmith.

Mortice means a lock cut in to a door which most of the locks I have seen in Thailand are, Rim Lock applies to lock fitted to the surface of a door.

I think you mean Dead Bolt which has to be locked with a key as a posed to a Nightlatch.

These days, mortise locks come with a dead bolt within the same rectangular body. The latch can be opened with a lever or knob handle, but you need a key to lock the dead bolt.

Contrast this with the common few hundred bahts cylindrical locks, where you press the knob on the inside to lock and just close the door. Good chance in forgetting the key and get yourself locked out.

Not a good idea to try to walk or crawl on corrugated cement roofing without putting wooden planks on there first, even then they can still crack and break the roof.

A few years back, my then girlfriend locked herself out of her car and house when she left the keys in the car. She had also left the dog in the car and was panicking as it was quickly getting stinking hot (August in Houston). She decided to 'break-in' to her own apartment and get the spare car key. While doing that, she slipped and fell through the window she was attempting to climb through and almost severed a major artery in her leg. Ten days in hospital, horrible scars; totally buggered up her dazzling career as a stripper.

seconded! - use common sense!

The sheer weight of us Ferengi's it may support a Thai with barely 45 Kilo, but certainly NOT a Farang!

...and of course the mentioned mortise locks would be a good idea!

Hope he reads this and takes the advise! :)

besides adventures like this can go very wrong, after all he was lucky!
