Thousands of stateless students barred from further studies

BANGKOK: -- A female Senator from the northern province of Chiang Rai has raised concerns that some young people born in Thailand, but do not have Thai nationality, cannot pursue further studies at university level.

Senator Tuanchai Deethet told TNA said she planned to lodge a motion on the issue with the prime minister during a meeting of senators on Monday.

Earlier this year the cabinet agreed that young people born in Thailand, with foreign parents and without Thai national status, should have the same rights and freedom as other citizens, she said.

Currently as many as 10,000 students are still not allowed to study at university or are able to study but will not receive certificates, said Senator Tuanchai.
