A friend has asked me to translate some English text into Thai for a tattoo. The test reads "Heaven is not a place, It's a state of mind".

For "State of mind" I was thinking สถานะของจิตใจ - comments?

Also if anyone wants to go for the whole thing, I'll compare it to my effort :)

Cheers, guys

สวรรค์อยู่ในใจ Heaven is in the mind.

or you can try a well know Thai saying.

สวรรค์อยู่ในอก นรกอยู่ในใจ

Heaven is in your chest(mind), hel_l is in you mind

NOTE 2 MODZ:

This post might be better in the infamous Pinned; The Tattoo Thread - Western Names In Thai Script, than the general language forum.

I concur wholeheartedly with Meadish, anytime you can rely on a colloquial thai idiom, proverb, phrase that is understood universally by thais it's the way to go rather than an artifical engrish to thai construct which may leave the thais scratching their heads.

Cheers guys. Yeah, I did tell him esoteric things do not translate well. Didn't put it in the tattoo thread as it was just the term "State of mind" (สถานะของจิตใจ) I was asking about and it seemed more proverbial and stand alone than scripting "Adrian loves Doreen" in Thai.

PS: I met a guy that had "Life is just a bunch of bananas" (at least that's what they told him it said) on his arm in Thai - he was drunk.

สถานะของจิตใจ = "State of mind"

You are right. Other possible words for สถานะ is สภาวะ and สภาพ. I would choose สภาวะ over สถานะ.

"Life is just a bunch of bananas" that could be ชีวิตเป็นเรื่องกล้วยกล้วย

กล้วยกล้วย (a bunch of bananas) is a idiom means easy or a piece of cake.
