ok, 5 years ago. A dead cockroach lying opposite of the room in islandia hotel in Karon for about TEN DAYS, nobody took it away.

Thaistaff always have problems with the back when it comes to to bend down :)

but on the first view, most hotels in Thailand are pretty clean, and for sure better as the most rooms I saw in Penang :D

I'm sorry what is going on here? The report does not state that the hotels in Thailand are this or that! It simply states that the hotels in question were voted or commented on by visitors to these specific hotels.

As for the comment "A lot of these are the sort of budget travelers that are partaking in these online feedback forums". What the heck does that mean? Pompous oaf! All travellers have equal rights to complain of bad service. I have stayed in hotels all over the world and you can find good and bad at all price levels.

I'm with you, Jimmu.

These "surveys" are a joke. Unless the travelers stayed in the same hotels it's completely useless. Then you have to get a proper sampling. And the "ratings" are completely subjective. It's pretty hopeless. Someone benefits from these type of surveys, but it's definitely not the consumer.

The same goes for any type of "Top Ten" list about anything.

As for me, the worst thing I've experienced in Thai hotels is the ownership letting the building fall apart, and that's pretty much evident from the time you step in the door. Service has always been up to par, even in the discount hotels. But I'm just one guy and I have my own preferences. My sister would completely disagree with me, for example.

The problem with this news article is the title. I really doesn't mean that "Thailand tops list of dirtiest hotels in Asia"...what it really means is A HOTEL IN THAILAND TOPS THE LIST OF ASIA'S DIRTIEST HOTELS. Totally different meaning. And, the article is written very poorly.

Having said that, I often use and post to that particular organization (TripAdvisor) and their traveler reviews are excellent. I have rarely found them to be very far off the mark.

Is it just me or did a few of the comments here miss the point.

It is a survey of ' The dirtiest hotels ' and it states that thailand tops for the dirties in Asia.

Not the best price in the USA , nothing to do with hiring a motorhome because it would be extremely difficult to manouver into Sukhumvit Soi 5. Nothing to do with 300 baht a night rooms .....

It is a thread that is about the dirtiest hotels.

Before we settled in Pattaya, we used to stay at Beverly Plaza Pattaya Hotel.

The location off Phratamnak Road (continuation of Second Road, parallel to Walking Street) was excellent.

However, in time, the quality was declining and so was the number of farang customers (but each time more Pakistani and Russians).

Last time we stayed there, from 11th December 2007 until 17th January 2008, we got bed bugs in our “Deluxe Room” and nobody could help: they were everywhere.

Sorry how can a hotel ruin your vacation, if you donot like it find another. Unless of course your mama has to approve.

Agreed! But look, the whole article respectiveley the website the link goes to is a joke. They split Europe, Italy, France and the UK. First of all, I was taught that France and Italy are part of Europe, the same is valid for UK, so why separate listings? When you look on the europe list there are almost all UK hotels mentioned. So then why would you split a separate UK list? They can't sort data by a simple critaria like continents, regions or countries. You want me to believe they didn't mess up with the hotels? Beginners.

There only problem is geographie, then.

The Eng Aung Hotel in Malaysia, Penang, Chulia Street surely beats 'em all by miles!

It was raining and the roof was leaking on several spots, rainwater dripping straight onto the bed, talking to the care taker (no Manager) he suggested to move the bed!

It was an old colonial structure, the windows (shutters) couldn't be closed, the door only with a latch, no lock provided, communal bathroom, mega-filthy, the bed, the mattress, the blanket... well for this it was "cheap" but still around 15 US$...made out of there without any damage or "pets".. :)

as a very frequent traveller in both China and Asia, I will not book a hotel until I have read the comments made on Tripadvisor. I find the comments made by other travellers to be very informative and generally speaking spot on.

But the nationalities of the ones commenting have to be taken into serious account. For example the Chinese never seem to complain about the rooms etc, their complaints seem to centre around the food, restaurants and breakfasts, whilst westerners appear to be more concerened about bathrooms/showers.

So its horses for courses really

usually thai hotels are the best in terms of pricing, services and cleanness compare to the hotels in the US and UK. with these price range, it is impossible to stay in any hotel in the western world.

this is a confusing article and it has nothing to do with other hotels in Thailand.

If you look at Thai prices on average, THB 2.300 per night, is not cheap for a basic room. I have rented rooms in Phuket, almost new, nice and clean for 1.000-1.500 THB, with breakfast.

You can not compare with European prices. Do you think Thais have European wages?

There are many very good hotels in BKK at under 1,500 a night that give far better value than the ones you seem to stay at. Maybe you need to look around more.

I would like to second this statement very much!

I've been living in Thailand for a long time and traveled throughout the country, never stayed in a hotel that costs more than 1,000 Baht a night (double and even with additional kid bed if space allowed) with TV, fridge and A/C.

I would give Thailand a 4star ranking regarding overall hotel quality and value for money.

How can be worst hotels in 2010 as the year is only a month old?????

Its Thai!! Like when you are 49 years old you can get the retirement visa which doesnt start until you are 50

They were assuming that if they were dirty now, in another 10 months they aren't likely to get any cleaner. Call it a public service announcement.

But as we all know, professional and domestic cleaning skills are not Thailand's forte. Anything above floor height? forget it!

I am afraid you may be right on that point.

However, I am also very much afraid that most people invited to classify the cleanliness of a bathroom have no idea at all what to look for, and where.

I have seen examples enough on that point.

A whiff of nice smelling stuff sprayed into the toilet pot, and all of a sudden the negative impression about the bathroom changed magically into a positive impression.

Another point is that one negative impression about a hotel makes everything else less acceptable.

But yes, if I look at cleaning in Thailand, generally, there still is a lot to learn.

But, who am I?

I'm not surprised at the UK hotels topping the European table. I have seen some really dreadful places....thankfully never had the privilege of staying in one. I just walk and give the owner a right earful. There just is not the same standard olf maintenance and cleanliness as mainland Europe. A decent 3 star in, say Austria, will match most good 4 stars in the UK.

Like everywhere it is down to policing....I hate that word as much as I hate institutional control and rules. But someone has to allow or close these dumps.

theres actually 2 hotels that are similar in name on petchburi rd.. the first house hotel and the first house.

only a few soi's apart and both are bad.. ive stayed in both and would have to agree that the first house hotel is horrible. the rooms are dirty and generally occupied by dirty people (wont go into that)

on the other hand the first house is also dirty but they make up for it with good service e.g. one time i had a pair of new nikes and around 100US stolen out my luggage!

Come to LaLeenta on Phi Phi where you to can experience the thrill of dying of something nobody can identify, just read phuketwan or phuket gazette online. Safe???? phuket.

I know all foreigners that die here in Thailand, die from: 1, Hart attack 2,Viagra overdose 3, Rapid deceleration injuries (brought on by broken hart)

I read the police reports All foreign deaths are solved within 5 to 10 minutes once the BIB have turned up. All irrelevant indicators are brushed aside, (bullet holes, stab wounds, ect) cutting to the nib, “horny farang…… too old ..Bad hart hold body… for photo me, my men”

So Thaimouse, I think you need to get the official version, I bet you’ll find he/she died of nothing serious !!!!!!!

I always say, "They all look the same when I shut my eyes."

That said, I recently stayed a hotel in changmai called S.P. (chaingmaisphotel.com) While it was tucked away from everything, it was a bargain for 400 Baht a night and it was clean enough, working AC & hot water etc etc. Very quite too.... trouble was, it sure was a bit far from the action...

regardless, I will stay there again.

action? gross!

Interesting I read a similar report this week that covered Europe where eight out of the ten worst hotels were in the UK, must see if I can't find it again and post it here, the hotel that was unanimously declared the worst sounded far worse than anything I've ever seen in Thailand!

http://www.tripadvisor.com/DirtyHotels-g4 love the review: "Arrived....Paid....Left...Relived" :)

I did the same thing, arrived, looked at the room, said no thanks moved on... That place in PHI PHI is nasty

and your variant should read 'an hotel' but then i'm old fashioned and i agree the article is very poorly written.

Hey. You want to try staying in some government hotels in India. We had one that was SO bad that we spent the night on wooden chairs. Blood on torn sheets, bed bugs, cockroaches, fleas, s""t on the floor next to the bog and so on. When I complained I was told to go and find somewhere else if I did not like it. Except we were in the middle of nowhere and so had no choice but to stay.
