I'm goona start by pointing out the guy who stands near my bar trying to sell cocaine

Fair enough.

There is another side to the recent war on drugs though.

I work with addicts who are trying to recover upcountry and I have heard some terrible stories about what happened during the war on drugs. People killed for buying 1 yaa baa pill. Innocents who never touched drugs in prison for a long stretch just becaause they didn't cooperate with the police in other matters.

terrible terrible terrible!

The last big crackdown over 3 years ago saw quite a few people shot for just taking drugs and not actually selling them. :o

The boys in brown personally finished dealers off, A thai guy I knew was shot about 6 times in front of his farang wife, :D

It was just over 2 years ago in Isarn and most of the country.

You are for this to happen again?

Maybe booze will follow, and that wouldn't be good for you.

I have to say that the crackdown has certainly worked better here than what they do in my country (USA). Because of the bleeding heart liberals the police are afraid to go into certain parts of the cities after dark. I don't know of any place here in Thailand where the police are afraid to go. On that basis I have to think they are doing a good job. I'm sure innocent people have been killed BUT many more innocent people have been killed in the USA by the dopers.  :o

Well, I know of places the Thai police are afraid to go after dark,- OR before it! :D

Different dynamics involved here, though, as there are in many comparisons between Thailand and any other place :D

If the whole show was done transparently, I could feel much more supportive of this 'war' on drugs. We know that the lack of transparency means even innocent people are in danger- and the fear is not without jusification- and those are just from the incidents we've heard about publically...

Please don't take pieces of my quotes out of context to fit somewhere else :D

Or at least don't quote me by name in such cases... :D

Well, it's obviously fair to say that LOS - like any country - has its problems with drugs, crime, corruption etc etc etc. It would be naive to think otherwise.

What I do know is that I can't wait to get to the stage when I can come over and stay over for good, without ever having to come back to the UK to earn money. I'm not blind to what goes on, but I'd rather have the disadvantages of LOS than those of London any day.

With the repressive and opressive government here to stay; why do you stay?

I have been living here for 7 months now and am bored to death.

This is not the Thailand I remember from the past.

I am a night person who likes to party.  But, with the drug laws and early closing times, it's just not fun anymore.

I would be interested in hearing from similar type people.

Farangs who are married or working here obviously have a good reason.

Good points, but I doubt you'll get any honest answers here!

Well DJ Pat, when you are dealing with opinions it's not likely there will be a lot of facts presented.

What? You think anyone here has an agenda/ax to grind? :o

Thanks for stating that you are not trolling. You have , of course, a right to your opinion. You like TRT, fair enough, I don't. I have never met an expat that agrees with their policies, that is why I thought you were trolling. NO offense meant.

Dear Neeranam,

Thanks for your feedback and understood your point :o

Actually, I have to admit that I am kind of odd in the expat community particularly when it comes to the famous moaning and whining about the country, her government and particularly the PM.

I rather stick to the majority of Thais that have made up their mind for whatever personal reasons and democratically voted the leadership into its second term.

Frankly said, I give a <deleted> about the early closing hours and consider those foreigners threating not coming to Thailand anymore but rather spend their money elsewhere and hence destroy the Thai economy most hilarious.

There are surely some TIT situations such as limiting the sale of small amounts of alcoholic beverages in the time from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm but heck, that is surely not a major problem to ponder about and can be easily coped with.

As far as the drug war and the violence in the South is concerned these are indeed serious issues. Any wasted life of an innocent person is clearly a shame, independant from who caused it and sincere condolences to the families. Nevertheless, the country has to cope with her major problems and onc can only hope that the acting and procedures in the future may be carried by more wisdom rather than over the board radical approaches. Closing the eyes, hoping and praying for peace in the world and that soft, pseudo intellectual behaviour of those better than the world liberals, however, ain't surely a solution either. As always the middleway can only be the right approach and one can only hope that this will also be recognized by our leadership here.

Neeranam, as family men we surely both agree that there are countless reasons for still living in LOS but heck why waste the time and explain when the average pisshead roaming the country most obviously would not get the scoop anyway :D

Cheers,

Richard

Stick to what you believe in. I do and it is pointless in arguing sometimes, just for the sake of it. Alcohol is a killer and should be carefully monitored.

I totally agree. Well said mate!
