Chiang Rai border shoot out leaves one dead

Staff reporters

The Pha Muang Task Force clashed with drug traffickers crossing the border in Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai province, killing one. A unit of the Task Force was patrolling the area near Ban E-Kor in Mae Chan District when they encountered 6 men who opened fire on the unit. The members of the Task Force returned fire, resulting in a 10 minute firefight with the drug traffickers. The traffickers fled back across the border leaving one of their members dead at the scene and abandoning a .38mm weapon, a small amount of heroin and 3.1 million baht in cash.

Ban E-Kor???

E-kor sounds like I-gor and is a Thai name for Akha people,

considered derogatory by many.

The gun and the little amount of heroin sound familiar.

These items are often found and they will show up again,

probably under similar circumstances.

But wouldn't it be interesting to know the real story behind

this kind of mystical press releases.

Where they smuggling Thai money into Thailand?

Or heroine from Thailand to Burma?

Where did the money come from and where is it now?

The vagueness of this kind of messages makes curious.

Limbo :)

you are asking questions that are impossible to answer did you read the report. Only the smugglers knew what their reason for being there was.It was patrol that came under fire , how should anyone know why the people that opened fire where there.

I agree. Difficult to get answers during a shoot and run situation... We saw 3 emergency vehicles and a helicopter in the area. At first, I thought they were responding to all the fires around here!

Like Limbo says, get the real report, before posting :D

Get it yourself!

I am puzzled!

What do you mean 'rijb'?

If a journalist quotes a press release of an organisation that sends armed people into

the field with obviously the 'right' to kill people I think it is a legitimate question to

ask for details about the "we killed someone and we found a gun, some heroin and 3 million

Baht" story.

Why, by all means, you expect mumbojumbo to come up with the answer?

Do you understand that your reaction can be considered very negative and not adding

anything to where this is all about?

Even insulting towards mumbojumbo?

I think you own him an apology, even if you didn't intend it to be insulting.

Everybody has the right to be stupid, but not in the way you did ...

Sorry to say so.

Limbo :)

‘Breaking news’ stories are sometimes released before all the details can be sorted out. Ask CNN, BBC, etc.

I agree that more information about the Mae Chan situation would be nice to have. But, I’d rather have a little timely information about this situation than no information at all.

I think it is arrogant for a few posters to try to dictate to the rest of us when a story is “ready” to be posted. Hence, my curt response.

And I think it would be stupid for you to wait for an apology.

Maybe if Khun Limbo would like to contact the police at http://www.royalthaipolice.go.th/# they will furnish him with all the answers to his questions and he can post indetail what exactly happened.

Limbo take a pill will you. I keep reading the story and what i read is a unit was on patrol (there are patrols many places in the world on borders). They happened upon some people during their patrol that started firing weapons at them. They returned fire. In a gun fight people get killed that is reality. Your questions leave me wondering about your mental health. The guys shooting at the patrol unit seem to have the right to do this with immunity in your opinion. Sorry you shoot at patrols you take the chance of getting killed it is pretty simple yes. And how could the patrol possibly know why they opened fire. If it was me I would just shoot to preserve my life screw the guy who fired at me I wouldnot care what his reason.

I didn't expect to find an eye wittness within our ranks.

Thank you very much!

Everything is very clear now...

Limbo :)

PS: Dear lovelomsak,

Do you know where the money came from and where it is now?

Can you tell us a little bit more about what happened?

It must have been extremely exciting, wasn't it?

Shoddy reporting. I agree with Limbo. There is no place called Ban E-kor. E-Kor is the official name used by the Thai Authorities to refer to the Akha People. To set things straight, Akha people do not like to be referred to as E-kor or Ikor. They prefer to be referred to as Akha.

Ban E-kor probably does not exist. It merely refers to a Akha village somewhere in Mae Chan. Unfortunately, the journalist who wrote this report did such a fine job of researching for minute details such as the village's name.

From what I know, Mae Chan no longer shares its border with Myanmar. Mae Chan was split up when a new district Mae Fah Luang was created. Another minor detail which the journalist did not mention?
