Myself and 6 friends who have thai conections decided after a long debate in our local pub today that all ths red / yellow shirt problems would be better disolved if there was a complete military take over whether blood shed or not. hopefully not and at the end of the day a stable government was installed wether it meant an exodus of thousands of ex pats who might not like what might happens in the future ( it might be a good thing in some cases if reading many forum debates from whinging falangs) YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE signed the caterham SIX

I am curious about why the target was a University. It may be near Gov't house, but it isn't Gov't house.

Seems odd.

It went from "Bomb goes off at university" to "Grenade goes off near govt house" and then finally I get an email from ThaiVisa telling me "Breaking News: M79 Grenade explodes at Govt House..."

Prime Minister Abhisit told journalists Sunday he believed the bomber wanted to create unrest, saying that the target was likely to be either Government House or the nearby National Counter Corruption Commission Offices rather than the university.

Can someone explain how they could miss such a huge building if it was intended for it,or is it that these grenades are fired from such a long distance?

Hmmmm when I saw m79 my first thought was Sae daeng or one of his boys .... and they certainly know where Gov't house is having used it as a target in the past!

BANGKOK: -- Officials have identified eight more hot spots after two bomb scares occured during the weekend. A grenade was launched near the Government House before explosives were found at the Supreme Court. More checkpoints are to be set up in addition to the more than 200 originally planned.

It's a shame that your representatives in government care nothing about you and only look out for themselves and their own interest. that depends on whether or not you buy into the propaganda, in my opinion the most likely candidates for this are either the dems or the yellows, a bit of self harm normally gets sympathy, just look at the PAD and Sondhi's assassination attempt (don't make me laugh).But as we have all seen recently assumptions without any evidence makes one look foolish. Even the PM and his deputy accused the reds of throwing the turd, hopefully this time if it wasn't self initiated they will wait for evidence to emerge before tarring the wrong people. maybe people on here should do the same.

well without any proof it is just as likely to be self harm as it is likely to be an attack. It simply comes down to which side of the fence you sit on, it's probably better to sit on the fence in these instances.

The yellow shirts have never been caught shooting M79 grenades at the Red's, while the yellow camp was bombarded almost nightly at times with casualties and lots of wounded as a result.

As for the M-79: It's been a while, but if memory serves the effective/accurate range is somewhat less than advertised. Under stressful conditions/in motion, getting a clear accurate shot at a distant target isn't all that easy, so 50 meters off mark at maximum range from a back of a vehicle while trying to hide is reasonable). Those things aren't exactly designed to hit small targets, more of an area effect.

Water cannons - are indeed sometimes used to diffuse bombs, either making the charge malfunction by dousing it with copious amounts of water or causing it to explode. A ex-bomb disposal guy told me the first option was uber-hated, since you have to check them anyway afterwards, and then the moisture adds yet another risk factor. Can't say if it's a good procedure, but seen it done a couple of times.

The above is relevant if assuming all this is "real", of course. TIT, therefore one can't be sure. Too many players out there (red shirts, government, army), with some factions within them to add to the confusion. Access to weapons, ammo and explosives is a laugh in this country, and getting someone to carry it out isn't a big deal as well.

Was it red shirts sending a message? Perhaps. Was it the government or army trying to hype anxiety & stress for their own ends? Maybe. Don't think we'll know for sure, and don't see how this really matters to most of us.

The problem doesn't lie with whodoneit, but rather with a social/political climate that allows these sort of things.

No ISA enforcement despite 2 bomb incidents: Suthep

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said Monday that the government will not yet enforce the Internal Security Act to control the situation despite two latest bomb incidents.

Suthep admitted that the firing of an M79 grenade into a university near the Government House Saturday night and the finding of C4 bomb inside the Supreme Court's compound Sunday were beyond expectations of the security agencies.

He said he had instructed the metropolitan police chief to adjust the security operation plan to step up security for key government offices and senior government officials.

Suthep said the ordinary laws are still enough for police to enforce to control the situation without having to resort to the ISA enforcement yet.

Glad to see you have the only working magic mirror in Thailand and can know these facts. Seems others like this government and those that wish for bad publicity would need to do this as well. Then there is the possibility that it has nothing to do with ether. I guess that evidence and facts won't be needed by many. Please dissect the word assume.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for an idea of how much of a joke this so called red shirt democracy movement has become, 2Bangkok has more clippings and translations from the red shirt rags. Recent front pages are now showing who they are pushing forward as their "big man".

The scans are not photo-shopped, nor are they satire. They really are pushing Chalerm as Mr Democracy.

I prefer "connecting the dots" using last weeks front pages - the ones pushing for bloodshed.
