You can apply for a WP under any visa / permit to stay but the WP will not be issued unless you have a Non-Imm (B or O) visa.

You can apply under your current tourist visa, get the receipt (Form #???) from them and go abroad to obtain a Non-Imm visa. This will need documents from your employer!

The OP has likely heard the following information:

Anybody can enter Thailand on a Tourist Visa.

Your prospective employer (your school) will then need to arrange a letter of Sponsorship from and through the Ministry of Education, to sponsor the conversion of your visa from Tourist Visa to NON IMM 'B'. On conversion, a 3 month NON IMM 'B' is issued; cost 1900 THB

Once this conversion had taken place the applicant has 3 months to arrange a work permit via the Ministry of labour. On issuance of the work permit and at the end the 3 month NON IMM B visa, the applicant can then apply for an extension of stay based on employment, on evidence of the work permit The length of the extension of stay runs concurrent with the validity of the work permit but maximum a year at the time. The cost of the extension is 1900 THB.

You still need to report every 90 days and a re-entry permit is required every time you wish to leave the country.

This is how my current visa and work permit were completed. The whole process from conversion to issuance of work permit took 5 weeks.
