February 16, 201016 yr This afternoon, Chaweng Beach was witness to yet another phony "charity box collection". The guy with the collection can is British, in his mid sixties with silver hair and glasses and his sidekick is a large swarthy farang about 35, both wear plastic clip tags with Samui Bangkok Hospital logos. When I asked him for his work permit or namecard, he had none and when further pressed that, "did he know the hospital owner is one of the island's wealthiest families ?", he had no answer. In the absence of any police these days, expect them to be on the roads and around the bars next ! Someone please try and get a photo of these xxxxxxxxx !

February 16, 201016 yr really bad, and also many of the big-medium-small charities abroad are just doing something very similar by donating to the cause they are showing of a very minimal part of their fundraising, just so they can claim they are doing it for a good cause, i am disgusted by these kind of things, shame on them, at all the levels!
February 16, 201016 yr So you have absolute proof they are scam artists? Please folks, let's not jump too quickly to assumptions of guilt. Kanagroo courts are plentiful already, let's please not add another one to the list.
February 16, 201016 yr The name card/proof of identity and/or official confirmation of what you are doing I can understand. That is common practice just about anywhere. But the work permit. Do you really need a work permit to collect (presumably unpaid) on behalf of a charity?

Yes, I refer you to the many cases of western Tsunami volunteers who had serious problems because they didn't have work permits.

February 16, 201016 yr Work Permit needed for work.Paid or unpaid. What you suggest might just as well mean that we need a work permit just to post on this forum, seeing the definition of WORK has now been reduced from the Newrtonian effort to this 'turn up on time and drink coffee' reduction.
February 16, 201016 yr I do not sugest anything. From the D.O.P Website. http://www.doe.go.th/service3_en.aspx 1. Definition “Alien” means a natural person who is not of Thai nationality; “ Work ” means to engage in work by exerting energy or using knowledge whether or not in consideration of wages or other benefits.
February 16, 201016 yr So you have absolute proof they are scam artists? Please folks, let's not jump too quickly to assumptions of guilt. Kanagroo courts are plentiful already, let's please not add another one to the list. These guys have been "working" the tourists in Chaweng since before Christmas. Like a sucker I donated a couple of hundred baht for their worthy cause which was a local school desperately in need of musical instruments. 3 weeks late I saw them they working over a punter in the street for the Nathon Hospital which was in desperate need of additional funding. These guys are obviously the local version of Sir Bob Geldoff or on the scam. I'll leave that up to the "kangaroo court"

Fair point. It doesn't take the usage of any much knowledge to post here at all, but that is fairly subjective and destined to the authorative interpretation. You are hereby warned, and good night.
February 16, 201016 yr just out of interest. do need a work permit to work with thai visa ?? too right u need a work permit to work for a charity. otherwise i would be out collecting money for fake charities. no money like easy money. be silly not to. well i wouldn't stoop as low as pretending to be a charity but begginng. why not. " can i have some money please" "yes sir here is 10 baht" "thank you come again" The opp os right. the fact they had no I.D no work permit is enough to arrest them. so they are either so charitable that they are collecting money fo a hosiptal and they care so much that they are willing to get deported for it. or they are fake. anyway true or not who care it is wrong. But if u put someones name up or a piccture then u might need some more proof. Or someone might randomly take a photo of me and accuse me of stuff without me having the right to explain. Kangaroo courts no thanks. like my freedome

Simple if people come up to me and beg. charity or not. i not give. if i want to give to a charity i give direct not to a stranger that asks me for money then i say know and they look at me with shoock. that is just part of a scam. so pull he string infront of my hand to rise my middle finger to these people Edited February 16, 201016 yr by BigC
February 16, 201016 yr Real or not real its a job to know who to give too....I sorted it out 15 years ago I give by direct debit to a charity that I want to every month. I still give a little on the street and hopefully bypass the middleman by doing this..rather gice it to a someone I can see is ill thou...But whatever I give I ain't going up when the crim reaper calls...............

Definition “Alien” means a natural person who is not of Thai nationality; “ Work ” means to engage in work by exerting energy or using knowledge whether or not in consideration of wages or other benefits. I believe that this can be interpreted differently although the definition seems pretty watertight?? There was an article which I had but cannot find now where the question of work when cutting ones own lawn, for example, was asked of a high ranking police/govt person. The answer was that doing these sorts of things around the house would generally be overlooked, especially as it involved no money changing hands.
February 17, 201016 yr If you want to give money to the needy, or for charity, do so only when you contact them, not the other way around. Go to the mercy corps website, or avaaz, or wherever you want to drop your cash, and donate there. Otherwise, most likely, your money will end up buying somebody beer. Scammers come in all shapes and colors and I'd think most of what you see out there, be it beggars on the street, or "charity collectors" are scams. Ok so I have in the past donated to the odd Thai school kids, but that's about it. If you see a cripple chances are he was crippled intentionally by his gang boss, if not abducted as a child to begin with, so by giving them money you indirectly support this heinous crime. Can't risk it. In Thailand I don't feel too bad about it because I know that the temples will feed the needy. Nobody will starve in this country.
