hmmmm city in Deep Southern Thailand. I think it may not be related to anything, but the normal problem makers in that area in hopes they can bring about an over reaction from a already highly puckered administration. Opportunity on their part. This is more isolated then it may appear.

Thailand really does want no tourists...

first mass protest and riot warnings

now bombings where you could lose your life or a limb just to get your money to spend here...

i guess an informed tourist is not looking thailand to come and spend their hollidays here

The army is using gt 200's.Whew I feel safer already! :D

Why are they still using this kit? It has been outlawed in the UK and the manufacturer is about to be prosecuted because of the false claims. This really beggars belief!! :)

...Some of you readers on this forum totally get overboard with "tourists won't come to Thailand" or Thailand has become dangerous.."; meanwhile, meany of you choose to live in LOS and know how safe it is... :D

Agree, i think LOS is the safest place. In the past 3 months, i only be assaulted by

-LG technician-only once

-Threatened by an African Prostitute-only once

-Threatened by a Thai Prostitute-only once

-Extorted by police-only once

-Threatened by a taxi driver-only once

Otherwise all is safe as usual :)

Crossing a street in Bangkok will give me a much higher statistical chance to get hurt than to get hurt from a bomb blasting at a ATM or a bank.So in term of numbers the chance a tourist will get hurt because of a bomb or a riot is pretty much ZERO.

It is ridiculous top quote Thailand as one of the most dangerous countries in the world for tourists. This is not Irak or Afghanistan and tourists are not a target.

If this was a post about "tuk-tuk scams" or "bar girl scams" or some other tourist related post I could see your comment but COME ON. We are talking about bank bombings and TOURISTS are probably the last thing on the bombers minds.

I would say that TOURISTS are on the bomber's minds? If you want to screw up a government what better way than to put a dent into an economy that benefits tremendously from tourism whilst at the same time raising doubts about the government's ability to protect its citizens and visitors to the country?

That's how terrorists work they raise fear and doubts into everyone's minds who in turn attack the government for allowing such things to happen.

Which judging by the posts on this subject is succeeding?

And we all remember how safe (not) the UK was when the IRA were at large - come on people lets be a little more practical and get on with enjoying this lovely Country and the People.

All banks in Thailand should have cameras not only for the ATM machines but for the banks security outside and inside day and night, as do banks in most countries, to identify robbery suspects, from the time of entering to the time of leaving a bank, or people hooking up vechles to pull out the ATM machines which is commonplace in Canada and the U.S.

Quiet now I was hoping less tourists would come as a result of this since most have nothing to add to Thailand except their money. The less tourists the less I am stopped everyday by some one looking for directions or some foolish thing that a normal person would have investigated before coming here. Do I look like a tour guide.? Must be my posting name.

Love your sense of humor, I was only threatened once my a tout in Patpong when I refused to go into his girlie bar, he became quite insulting when he realized that my money was not going to buy him lunch.

Especially if the security device (GT200) that's being use to detect the bombs (and protect the Tourists?) is NOTHING MORE THAN A CAR WHIP-ANTENNA, ATTACHED TO A NON-ACTIVE CIRCUITBOARD AND BATTERY THAT DOESN'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING AT ALL (except make the plastic enclosure that the antenna is attached to, a little bit more believably heavy). The same "device" that has been forbidden (by the British Government) to be sold to, (or used in) nearly every other country that ended up buying it from the unscrupulous company that made it (before the owner was arrested), in England.

The SAME company, that a few years earlier, was operating in the USA, untill the FBI figured out that it was a BOGUS device (which, in the USA, has been a very big no-no since the dawn of electricity, when "newly electrified" devices stated being produced that claimed to be able to "fix or cure" anything from halitosis to hangnails, sour milk in your cow to your inability to attract a partner), and shut it down. But it just popped up again in Great Britain, with the SAME owner) :D

You know God invented Google for a reason, folks.. USE it.

In fact, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowsing

(it even NAMES the GT200!!!)

And now, the Thai Authorities are still stuck using this useless stick (while nearly every other country has completely abandoned it as "quack science"), because to STOP using it would cause a loss of face for having bought and overpayed for it, in the first place.

So, more bombs will go undetected (and then go boom), killing glass windows at banks, ATMs, and both the Thais and tourists that use them, and the Authorities will continue to pursue innocent people, based on the tired wrist muscle twitch of some dude pointing a car antenna, possibly sending that innocent person to jail.

Yep, put out the Welcome Mat, LOS.. that desperately needed surge of Tourists should be arriving anytime now. :)

Geez.

Note: Last night in Bangkok, I drove down Rachada Road (past Hollywood, RCA, etc) at about 12:30 AM. Usually, you can barely get down the street; it's so jammed with cars, taxis, foodcarts, and partying people (ESPECIALLY TOURISTS). But last night? A few scattered taxies, and nearly deserted streets and side sois. My TGF was visibly upset at the sight of it.

Here's some simple math: bad ecconomy + political instability + much fewer tourists = DEATH.

WAKE UP, THAILAND.. you're killing yourself.

Two wounded in 7 bomb blasts in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: -- Two were injured in bomb attacks at seven banks in Narathiwat on Tuesday.

Three bomb explosions were reported while four others occurred in Rangae and Sungai Kolok districts.

A bomb went off in the municipality at an ATM booth at the Krung Thai Bank, wounding Prom Siriporn, 46 a street sweeper.

Two other bombs meanwhile exploded near the two branches of the Government Savings Bank.

Later, in Rangae district, a fourth bomb occurred at an ATM booth of the Government Savings Bank, wounding a 26-year-old man, identified as Charnwit Uepanyasil. Another bomb was reported at an ATM booth of the Krung Thai Bank but bomb squads destroyed it with a high-pressure water gun.

In Sungai Kolok, two bombs were found at ATM booths of the Krung Thai Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives. Bomb disposal teams defused both of them.

Meanwhile, a roadside bomb was detonated by a remote signal in Bacho district, but no one was wounded in the incident.

After the bombings in Narathiwat early Tuesday, soldiers from a special unit used the GT 200 bomb detectors and signal jammers to screen all banks in Yala municipality. Officials are patrolling the areas although there has been no report of an attack in Yala so far.

Now that lack of people on the street last night would not have anything to do with the fact that it was the last day of a long weekend and after partying all weekend or being away in their home towns people had to get back to work today would it? Monday Monday.

Seriously people

Thailand is safe, so do not cancel your trips.

If you do not get killed by lovemaking with a girl while you are heavily medicated by viagra, i doubt a bomb will get you.

PS. Just bring cash with you, so you will not need to go to the bank to change it

PPS. To those with no sense of humour-that was a joke

Exactly, extremists in the south are using the present situation to try to confuse the authorities........... Might work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These days, I feel it is better to be cynical, and see all the news regarding yellow/red violences as entertainment.

I have questions to all these little attacks/group gatherings here and there and the need of 'security' increase as a result.

I as the normal day to day people am confused.... In intelligence work, one can work in wonderful ways to confuse the public, and to achieve his/her/their ultimate goal(s).

When I see those red shirts gather in groups. I wonder if they are real red, or hired red by whoever's behind the scene. And the motorcycle grenade lobbing right after the court's decision over T's assets-freeze is questionable to me as who's behind the attack, and its purpose.

Can I say that the real motives of those behind the scene are to taint the opposition, or to infuse fear into the public, and therefore to tighten security control using 'military' or 'police' force? And I think that means arms/personnels budget increase, money flowing here there etc, lesser freedom to the public.

In more advanced countries, where their citizens are more educated (more educated isn't the right word here, can't find a better word from my head now, what I mean is that they are not that easy to be fooled), and the use of violence can backfire, we would see less of such foolish acts. (Don't lecture me about Bush's 'infuse-fear' administration though)

Anyways the end result is the citizens or residents lose, while those in the act gain more power in their hands. Whatever violence acts that have happened here and will in the future, is rooted to power/turf struggle.

Whatever that are happening, I doubt the more intelligent Thais even care, or are too confused/annoyed to even care about. Elites, middle, labor class or not, nothing is going to change the flow of the thing here, everyone is being played, or involved in the playing process. That's what happens in a pseudo-democratic country, and where armed forces have more power than the people who feed them.

Call me a 'nut' but I reaffirm that IMHO these events are ALL staged... not by terrorists but by some arm of the gov. to give people boring talking points, further separation and confuse the nation. It would be a novelty that such things coincide with things that matter and should be the focus like :

- The dissolution of parliament / democratic party because they took 236m Baht from the industry... allowed are 30m

- Thaksin case, where probably the rest of his assets might go to the gov. since there's another 10 criminal lawsuits

- health care (and I don't mean dangerous vaccination crap, that's another scam from the pharma-mafia)

- growing economic concerns and what is going on in the ASEAN region which is going to be like the EU in short

*gosh*

"lo and behold; then I saw the Reichstag burning"

Hmm, seems banks are a popular target these days. Wonder how this will get linked to Mr. T?

In respect of your comment, I understand the bombings are related to the outcome of the Taksin case. As serveral Banks are believed to of been sponsors of the Coup in 2006, that threw out Taksin & lead to TRT being disbanded. In my experience with people, we are all one in what ever part of the world we were originally born & Thai

people are No different...Peace.

NO

You guys are getting events very mixed up.

The bombings in this report are in the South - they have nothing to do with Thaksin and the court case - they are to do with the extremist violence that has plagued the South for the past several years - you know the stuff where innocent people are killed every day.

Hmmm, you really shouldn't make comments if you are not at least slightly informed about what is happening in Thailand.

So t be safe, i have come with with a safety guide to be safe while in Thailand

Only 4 rules so far, feel free to add more

1. Make sure one article of your clothing is red color, this will ensure your safety if you run into red shirts

2. Make sure that you also have one article of your clothing in yellow, to ensure your safety if you run into yellow shirts

3. Make sure the third article of your clothing is other color, i suggest green. This will ensure that if you stopped by the police you can either see who he supports and point to the color, or you will be able to show that you are not part of anyone but are in fashion.

4. Do not go topless, as you may be kidnapped and raped by a gang of ladyboys.

Daily outfit should be red top, yellow shorts/pants, green shoes/thongs/flip flops

I dont thnk it matters whether tourists are the target or not - it is the perception that matters. People around the world are not queing up as if Thailand is the only destination offereing the same sort of holiday. Thailand was often the destinaion of coice (a) becaues it was perceived as a peaceful country (:) because it has nice beaches and interesting sites © because it has a different culture and identity and (d) because for most western europeans it was a financial bargain

Now it still has the beaches and the interesting sites but is rapidly losing its financial advantage (amid al this chaos how is the Baht so strong?), its culture and idenity (in common with many places) is being subsumed by globalisation and since the original coup tourists are beginning to feel it is no longer peaceful. They are even now trying to discourage the people who would have braved these issues to visit a place that was, albeit unoficially, free and tolerant of pretty much any lifestyle.

In their defense - this was sent as a "news update" email to members of TV.. and the email conveniently left out the words "In Narathiwat" which is extremely misleading considering the events of the past week. Someone in TV needs to take a journalism ethics class.

I visit Yala every year and i dont think this has anything to do with TS, the last few years violence is in every paper daily. Last year it was a little more safe due to more police and army on the streets and alot of roadblocks in the middle of muang Yala. Still there were bombings to hit the schoolteachers of buddhist schools and monks, this because the muslims want to rule that provinces.People dont feel safe there anymore, going into a mall you are going to be searched by securityguards. I feel bad for my family there and for the maire of Yala which me and my wife visit if we are there, what was better last year is destroyed again.

Anyway since not many tourists come to the deep south. Thailand will be safe to travel to. my heart goes out to the families of the people who were killed.

<deleted>? Bombed banks in an already embattled southern province and within 23 posts, we have links to Thaksin and an obscure reference to Pattaya hookers.

The Farang Book of Thai Knowledge isn't very thick is it?
