Visa Status & Licence Renewal

Recommended Posts

Hope someone can advise on this one. I have a 12 month multiple entry visa which expires on 12 Sept 2005. I can reenter anytime prior to 12th and stay for 90 days even tho this 90 days will take me past 12/9/05 (confirmed by consul) however:- My 12 month licences for car and motorbike expire on 5th October. when I front up at the licence office with my passport (and all the other paperwork) to take out a five year licence, my visa will show as expired, even tho I have a permit stamp to stay for 90 days. does anyone know if this will be a problem ??

What is important is your permitted to stay stamp. I have not had a valid visa for years (as is true of most married/retired folks here). Or should I say "should be important"? :o But seriously there should not be any problem.

This is the age-old mis-understanding. A visa is isued by an embassy or consulate abroad and is basically just a recommendation to let a person enter the country. In principle the mission issuing the visa should check the background of the applicant before granting the visa.

Once reaching Thailand, you face the immigration police, who's job it is to decide wether or not to let you in and if so, for how long. Once you get a chop "permitted to stay until ...." your visa is void. (In case of multiples one entry of multiple entries is used) Even if you have a valid visa the immigration can refuse entry for various reasons.

This just as a reminder, from arriving in Thailand until leaving, you are under the hands of the immigration, i.e. Ministry of Interior.

Nothing to do anymore with embassy/consulates who report to the ministry of foreign affairs.
